more positive news

we can keep our 1st this year if it's top 10.

tdl bait:

barrie: 1st +?
muzzin: 1st +?

- Tumbleweed

this is what I was talking about just before Babcock got canned... Dubas MUST be preparing for the time leading up to the TDL.

particularly Barrie, with such a low cost this year - if he can get a 1st or another player on a good contract ... that has to be looked at...

no point in going passed the TDL with a few guys if the "mathematics" don't support making the playoffs...

that's why Andersen is starting tonight... they already know that they can't keep throwing away games....

Nylander is a huge liability.

Every time he carries the puck into the attacking zone, he makes a bonehead play, give the puck away, then he floats back to the neutral zone or bench. If you watch him play, all he does is kill plays, or misses the net with a low% shot. He’s embarrassingly weak defensively. Every time he gets the puck he loses it right away if he doesn’t have space. Then he floats around waiting for someone else to dig out the puck.

I don’t think Keefe actually means what he said about Willy, how he’s been great. As a coach, those missed assignments will drive you crazy.

Keefe will lose his patience soon......Nylander is still a must trade , we dont need him with marner back.... he will get you a lot in return and defence is what we need ....and a bit of truculence

If Nylander is as bad as everyone who hates him and wants him gone says, then why do they then turn around and say "he will get you a lot in return" or put him in some absurdly one sided deal in favor of the Leafs? You can't have it both ways.

Nylander has not been the problem. I think he’s been good. He also breaks up a lot of plays, steals a lot of pucks and back checks. I don’t think we’re watching the same game.

At the request of ⁦‪@ATFulemin‬⁩, here are the lowest 5v5 xG% games for skaters who played more than 15 minutes since '07. Cody Ceci's game tonight ranks 12th worst in this timeframe (out of ~160,000 skater games). Pretty impressive. pic.twitter.com/SyywHeROX5

I don't see anyone saying he is a top two way player...

He is much better in his own end than he gives credit for. He also back checks better than most on the team.

If anyone has been a liability in their own end on his line it has bee Matthews.

what could possibly lead you to the conclusion that ceci is underrated?

he fails the eye test
he fails the advanced stat test
he fails the traditional stat test
he fails the "don't make 6 boneheaded plays per game" test
he fails the "don't turn your Norris calibre D partner into a pylon" test

exactly what has he done in his career (both in Ottawa and Toronto) to show that he's anything more than a mediocre bottom pairing dman

No single player is the problem with this team. It's not having 5 guys committed to playing with structure in the defensive zone. You watch top teams like the Bruins and Blues and Caps and they're all on the same page with respect to the defensive zone.
Keefe needs to implement a wholistic approach to the defensive zone. One where fly by stick checks, puck chasing and weak / hurried clearing passes are turned over and extend offensive zone time for the other team are not part of the program.

He has been okay, he won't be in the top 4 forever unlike Zaitzev.

Your fault if you thought he would get a lot of PP time. Krug mans that top unit and it's heavily utilized
