I think the last 2 years he was coach the talent really started to slip. The core aged and regressed(excluding Kane), and several good players were traded away for inferior value.
The roster he and now JC were handed these last few seasons is a garbage roster. No other way to put it. Void of skill and speed. Worst blue line in the entire league. - SimpleJack
Hyperbole? Yes we lost a few guys, but Panarin, ADB, Schmaltz came into his own, Kahun was a nice surprise (and even played decent D), AA was still putting up 45 pts. There were and are plenty of fast and/or skilled players on the Hawks. Their biggest problem is that their play in the defensive zone went to crap (5v5 and PK).
If all you have is skill and speed you get TOR. Not a bad team, but not one that is likely to win in the playoffs unless they get stellar goaltending for four rounds.
Whatever, agree to disagree. |

The blame game is getting old
Where does this organization go from here?
Joe Sakic has done a masterful job in Colorado.
Watching Toronto & Colorado tonight
There is nothing in the Hawks game that looks like this - other than Goaltending
Speed - more speed - power- passing - finesse & grit
Night & day - Colbyboy
Well 6 of the 9 seasons Sakics team missed the playoffs
Finished dead last/15th in the conference once, 14th twice
Got out of the first round once
Masterful? Or reaping his bad years now with the high draft picks/tanking years?

Right? Like let's not think of that 9yr run...but NOW they're doing well (in the regular season, nonetheless)
Kind of like those that say..."forget about the 3 cups Q won and all the success/development of future HOFers". Let's focus on losing to a good nash team in his last season here. |

the maturing of mackinon to super star status has more to do with it than sakic...but those 1st round picks of rantannan and maker look awfully good;lets see how they live up to the WC rep in the finals hype...
it does appear they have the potential to strongly contend for the next 5-6 years...
i wonder if sakic might come hunting for keith at the TDL...he would be a great fit as 3-4 dman with championship pedigree for that team; would keith agree...would stanbow move him... |

Not absolving Stan AT ALL, but Kempny was not good playing for Q. He was consistently lost in his own end and had the same pinching problems as Gus. This isn't because Q was bad with young players, but just a fact that he didn't work well within the system being played. I doubt that he would be much better under Colliton.
I have two problems with this argument (which admittedly aren't all that strong). 1st, We had Panarin for two years and we got flushed in the first round of the playoffs. That's not necessarily an indictment of him, but just having Panarin on this team does not solve the underlying issues.
2nd, Q is partially to blame for this mess. As good of a coach as he is, the team was not performing as well as was needed under him the last two years he was coach.
There is blame to go to the FO, coach and players in understanding how we got to this place. - Chunk
We would have lost Panarin for nothing, no way we could afford him, we got Saad for an extra two years. Look, could Stan have done better in some of his moves? In hindsight yes, but he did not have a lot of bargaining power with some of his moves, and he still won two cups... |

Outside of Kane and Dach I don’t see any high end skill. Not much speed either. And the Dcore is definitely the worst in the NHL. All together compared to most other teams there’s a major lack of elite level talent.
I know speed and skill isn’t everything, but it’s gotta be among the most important things.
Our roster has a lot of the other intangibles. We’ve added plenty of grit and toughness. There’s a lot of experienced and smart hockey players.
What we don’t have is the skill/speed. |
