You dropped a couple big news items on Madden from GMJR

The Pens aren't ready to give Murray the long-term deal he want yet and may just go to arbitration.

When asked if they'd try Galchenyuk back with Malkin, GMJR answered (also on Athletic now): Nah, not necessarily,” Rutherford said. “Not really. I’m not totally convinced that there’s the right chemistry there. You have to have players that have the chemistry, the right fit. I never felt that that was going to be a place for him. The fact of the matter is, when we’re totally healthy, he’s going to have to work very hard just to get in the top 12."

Lol woof. Might as well trade him for scraps.

It's hard to argue any of that. He kind of dumped on Kahun early in the season too and Kahun turned things around. Maybe he's hoping for a similar result. I like that JR isn't afraid to take the occasional jab at under-performing players.

I'm encouraged by his attitude on Murray too. I think it was an apt comparison to Cam Ward.....JR gave him a big contract that Ward never lived up to.

Good thing he only gave him that Bridge deal. Freaking 6 mil per for 6 or more years would be looking awful right about now.

He wasn't lying about Kahun, he did get scratched. Might have been the only non-AHL guy to get a healthy scratch at forward all year.

I've come around to waiting on the off-season to evaluate what to do with the goaltending. I'd want both goalies for the playoffs.

I doubt it. Sid wants straight line guys. He also gets time against other team's scoring lines and I can't see Sully wanting Galchenyuk in those match ups.

If he's not playing with Malkin, Galchenyuk needs to carve out a place on the 3rd line as a depth scorer.

I want all 3, DeSmith included. Can’t deal from a position of weakness when staring at a cup run

The return for Galch in terms of futures they'd probably be lucky to get a 3rd.

In terms of a hockey trade you can really only hope for a player in a similar position, preferably an LD.

Or you have to just hope some GM sees something in him and actually values him.

I don’t even care what the return is lol free up the space and try and trade for Hall.

Two teams that could make a lot of sense in a buy low scenario for Galchenyuk: Dallas (who really needs help on the PP) and Boston who could use the depth and who have a penchant for getting the most out of skilled players, as they did last year with MoJo

DeSmith is not very good. He's positionally above average but his ceiling is a career backup...

Being near Dallas, I attend a few of their games and listen to the local media. They're fixing to make a trade to reinvigorate the squad. Names being floated.. Radulov and Benn... I don't think we could pull off either of those though.

Rutherford basically admitted after the trade that he valued Galch's contract status probably more than his on ice play. He's not wrong about that.

"I won't (try to re-sign him immediately)," he said. "That's another thing that gives us some options going forward. We'll see how it goes, whether we re-sign him or use that cap space. That's something we wouldn't have been able to do if we still had Phil.

"That's just part of how our world works now. But that's another thing I like about it, actually. A player who has an expiring contract."

Benn's contract is as tough as fighting against him... guess Grindaaa would take over the first hundred bucks though.

Ya, normally those kind of players also bring a special effort/performance...

Simon is better in every regard other than shooting the puck. Much better board player. Defense and shielding the puck are way superior. I even think he's a better passer with better vision. Sheary has a better shot (obviously). Neither deserve 3mil contracts on this squad. I'd take Simon over Sheary every day of the weak because of his versatility, but I'd move on if he asks for a penny over 1.5mil. I'd prefer 1.25.
- madmike71

I agree with this assessment. I would even top out on Simon at $2M. See, I don't hate him. I just never want to see him in the top 6 ever again. It's just too painful to watch. Also, if we lose last night by one goal, I have a feeling the sentiment toward Simon would be a little different. Maybe not torches and pitchforks, but...

I think you can look at the game flows with base app but to view the games youll need a sub. Sometimes the app has free games on it though.

In the app I go to scores, choose the game, then to game centre for that game and then game flows.

Funny you should mention that. I was seriously thinking last night, does Kessel, even with Toronto picking up a portion of his contract, have negative trade value? I think he's being exposed right now and has two years after this year at $6.8M per.

Galch has been a disappointment, but I'm still glad they made the move. I would just look to move on from Galch ASAP. Unfortunately, I think it will take a little bit of time for some teams to drop out of the playoff race.

The most basic research would show Kessel has the lowest shooting percentage of his career and a 96 PDO...

By the end of the season those likely regress to the mean...

Does it coincide with having the worst linemates and PP group (not sure if this is true or not) of his career? He is also 32 years old and not into fitness it would seem. If I had to bet, I would say Kessel stays on his current downward trajectory.

Trading Kessel for an underwhelming return after an 82 point season was a total Patriots move (other factors aside) that I think will end up being a huge relief.

I assume it was Madden and JR that compared him to Cam Ward? Regardless, yes, that is what I would worry about, too.

I hadn't even considered arbitration. I'm guessing that wouldn't sit too well with Murray, but I don't know.

Sort of a risk on the Pens part, too. It's binding, right? They better have a good idea of what range the number will be before going down that road.
