Debrincat or Saad for Nylander?
Nylander has been having a much better year. 17 points in 23 games. +4. But what I really like is his contract. 5 years at 7M.
Saad is signed for 2 years at 6M.
Debrincat at 4 years at 6.4M - RedRevenge
Both Cat and Saad are more complete hockey players so no thanks. If the Hawks trade someone it'll be Gusto and CC. I hope Gusto keeps scoring so we can get a nice draft pick for him. |

I wouldn’t trade Saad straight up for Nylander, so no thanks. I would not trade for a forward unless young and 200’ player, or if one way forward, then a young 40 goal scorer. |

Hey Mike Babcock....simply put your players quit on you. They quit on you because you are a terrible human being. You are an average coach with an extremely oversized ego. You finally got exactly what you deserve you selfish wiener. The hockey world is ecstatic.
this is disturbing and sick...what's his deal...so wrong across the board...

Apparently he played for him in Detroit? Has been waging a campaign against him since.
Maybe (literally) too many hits to the head = anger control issues.

One of the things Commodore hates Babcock for is that he healthy scratched Mike Modano at 1499 regular season games in his last season in the NHL. And I think Babcock also ran Commodore out of Detroit same season with a trade to Tampa.
Quite unusual for a guy from Western Canada to pound on another guy from out there, they usually hang together. So there is probably other stuff Commodore knows.
Another thing Babcock supposedly did was verbally accept the coaching job with the Buffalo Sabres and then pulled the plug and went to Toronto.

I would do Delia, Shaw, Smith for Nylander.
Toronto would get the goalie they need, Smith and Shaw would equalize the money.
Other option is Crow for Nylander +
Again they get the goalie they need and cap space next season. We would get a top 6 winger plus extra in return for the cap space we are helping them with. Picks or prospects. - gifman
Leafs already have a backup goaltender that can't stop pucks at the NHL level, they sure don't need another one in Delia. |

Leafs need forwards harder to play against, and defensemen who can defend, plus a back up goalie.
Saad, Shaw & Delia for Nylander ++
Maybe add Gilbert if he’s not going to be one of the eventual 6 defensemen. - scottak
Too much salary going to Toronto. Close to 11 mil and they are right against the cap. |

Question: Do you trust a guy to join the coaching staff at any level (even in minors) - who basically decided that a mentorship role wasn't what he was interested in?
I mean, fair enough in that something like that takes a ton of commitment, but if you decide that you can't -which a mutual decision to terminate a contract says to me (and it also sounds like it was initiated by Versteeg, as opposed to by the Hawks' organisation ... that this isn't something that Kris may feel capable of. In other words, I think that ship sailed with this termination ... maybe he can be the stadium DJ. |

One way Willie soft as a baby’s ass Nylander with a $6M cap hit??? Thanks but no thanks - paulr
Leafs should not be looking first at forwards harder to play against. I would try for a dman prospect whom has been touted as possible first pair ceiling. Even a mid round to late first round pick from a previous draft is where I look.
Furthermore, I would try to bring in players who are the long term help at the position which is their weak link. Obviously the defence position is what everyone cites as the Achilles heel. So bringing in forwards with a greater compete physical dimension is more of a lateral/horizontal move. It doesn't address their problems on defense.
I realize too that the team needs to change the quantity of offensive gifted dmen in favor of better defensive dmen.
Changing the style of play and changing out some of those dmen is not something that maybe happens instantly. In fact it is more long term forecast but the right move to bring in the correct style dmen and to let Tavarez go |

But Saad needs to be resigned in 2 years. Nylander doesn't and he's been scoring more and his cap hit is slightly higher.

If Shaw cannot go and they play 7 dmen, this might be an opportunity to play Gus at LW. (Though long term I do not think that is in the best interest of Gus or the Hawks.)

Saad is like the scarecrow, needs to find some brains. And a set of hands wouldn't hurt. He might be the biggest and fastest player they have, but I see him as a trade chip. With his toolbox he needs to be more effective. He makes what, about 6 million? He's not worth that. What's he going to want next time? |

Saad is good at a lot of things, but not great at anything. Nylander is really good (not even great) at one thing. I’d rather ice a forward group consisting of 12 Saad clones than 12 Nylander’s. |

Why would you think Gus can play left wing? You realize if he's put on the wing he's liable to make mistakes, especially in coverage and that would look bad on Gus, the coach and potentially the team. For better or worse Gus is a defenseman, leave him at that position. |

He impressed me in the game against Toronto. Lots of A grade chances and he's been having a good season so far. 17 points in 23 games. +4. He's signed 5 more years at 6.9M
He had 61 points in both '17 and '18 seasons. He's also young (23) and fits our mold of amassing young stars.
Saad has 12 points in 21 games. Is signed for 2 more years at 6M. I don't know if we'll end up resigning him. How much will he demand and for how long? His contract expires when he's 29 (He'll turn 30 when his next contract starts).
I see him as a trade chip, but who wants him? Toronto needs the cap space and a two-way forward. So I can see both teams as potential trading partners. Though, Toronto is in dire need of defense, so Murphy/Maata/De Haan seem like better targets for them. |

I am suggesting for one game because the Hawks could be short one forward if Caggiula and Shaw cannot go and they are dressing 7 dmen anyway. In the same situation Q played a Dman on the wing for one game. Otherwise you are double shifting a forward or messing with line combinations or messing with D pairings the whole game.
