I don't think trading Nylander means he admits anything. It would be a cap move. Nylander is great value at 6.9. If anyone thinks differently, look at other contracts around the NHL - RogerRoeper
It's by no means a bad contract, but I'd stop short of saying that it's 'great value'.

16 of 31 NHL teams are currently within 500K of the cap. Vast majority have contracts they can't move. Leafs can move any contract right now. It's annoying for people to act like the Leafs are the posterboy for "Cap Hell" and Dubas is bad at managing the cap. It's simply not true - RogerRoeper
Dubas isn't bad at cap management... he's bad at contract negotiations.
The CAP is managed by Pridham.
Pridham joined the Leafs from the National Hockey League where he most recently served as Senior Director, Central Registry and Senior Advisor, Central Scouting. He began his career at the NHL in 1999 as a coordinator in NHL Central Scouting. In 15 years with the League, he served in a number of capacities in the Central Scouting and Central Registry departments with duties that included serving as the contact person for NHL General Managers, Assistant General Managers and NHL Executives on issues involving the CBA, salary cap and NHL Central Scouting department.
This is taken from Dubas post when he promoted Pridham.
Leafs fans are funny - if you suggest trading a guy, you get accused of saying the guy sucks.
Nylander is the obvious guy to trade because he's a good player (too soft, but what'evs), on a reasonable contract. We'd hopefully get back a good player.
Somebody earlier suggested exploring what you would get for Matthews. Hell, I'd be willing to listen. If it got us his equivalent on the blue line, I'd do it in a heartbeat. - Atomic Wedgie
Yeah I dont get that, and I certainly dont think Nylander sucks. If we want to have 2 solid Centers AND Marner, than naturually he is the one that has to go to address the defensive needs we desparately need.
As for the trading Mathews mantra we see now, yeah ok you can listen to offers. But Snakes is what 28/9? Mathew for now is the future for now.

Dubas also got guys signed for longer. It will be interesting to see what Laine gets in 2 years. My feeling is these contracts will look fine (Nylander's already looks good).
The Dubas/Keefe defenders already lining up the excuses: "Have to give them time to put a team together that can win; this season is already lost ('because of Babcock!!') - have to at least give Keefe and Dubas until the end of 2020-2021 season to prove what they can do!!

has anyone actually said that here?
I do think Dubas and Keefe have this season and next to get the job done before the knives come out

Like Nylander stops short of making contact to retrieve a puck.
Willy can carry the puck with the best of them. But that’s it. He has terrible aim, his passes are usually giveaways, he doesn’t battle for pucks, and he NEVER backchecks. People see his skating and how he carries the puck and they think, “wow he looks really good!” But in reality, he’s too much of a liability because of his unwillingness to do a lot of the things you have to do in the NHL.
Furthermore, he full of himself. Everything he does reeks of being a spoiled brat. The way he celebrates, even if they’re losing bad. The poop he posts on social media (like Kap golfing in Vegas), his obsession with fashion, he disrespected the Tre Kronor at the WHC, he never takes accountability for his mistakes (sanheim).
Barrie? Who hasn't shown it in 20 games but has shown it previously in his career. I know it's crazy to say....but what if, this is an anomaly for Barrie?
