Management did not manage this properly
Put keefe in a bad situation.
But i expect the leafs to win tonight, this soft team will put forth an effort finally.
Looking forward to seeing how the players will be used, perhaps see a little less of the 4th line. Unless the team needs some heart on the ice. |

In all fairness, what are they supposed to do? They can't be ready to write-off the season or they wouldn't have fired Babcock. He wasn't getting results, the players were clearly not playing for him nor were they executing, and I'd speculate that at points his shenanigans start to create ill will between him and the coaching staff.
They could fire Babs and then put Hakstol in as the interim coach, but that's a terrible position - Hakstol sucks. They might as well put in the athletic trainer as the coach; there'd at least be fewer point shots.
If you're trying to recover and not lose the season, I would think Keefe is the only way to go. Maybe it falls on its face and it ends up as a lost season, but you have to try. |

Here is an interesting take on Babs
https://twitter.com/1967e...tatus/1121245537397817344
i think it covers a lot of the complaints I have seen. playing 4th line in crucial times etc.
the quickest and easiest tell will be how Keefe uses the D.
keep pairings together?
I was not planning to stay up to watch tonight, but i will now

If the Leafs didnt have the 1st round pick dilema I could see going the interm route maybe.
the options are try to fully tank to get top 10 pick or make the playoffs. no room for the mushy middle |

Source: ~90% of the Leafs were relieved to see Mike Babcock go.
The GM obviously was ready for it, too. Now the heat is on them with their season on the line.

Lou & Babcock vs Dubas & Keefe
Gardiner vs Barrie
Zaitsev vs Ceci
Borgman vs Schmaltz
Kadri vs Kerfoot
McElhinney vs Sparks/Hutchinson
Brown, Marleau, 2 1st rounders, Durzi, Grundstrom vs Muzzin and capspace
Martin, Komarov, Lindholm vs Petan, Spezza, Shore
Mikheyev vs no Mikheyev
Let's agree that the Lou&Babcock combination has already proven to be quite a bit better than the Dubas&Keefe side. - MaximusAurelius
I...i dont get this.
Shouldnt you let dubas and keefe have a chance to show what they can do at the nhl level first before we make comparisons.
Keefe as a good record in his prior leagues, i get that the leaf bench is very inexperienced at the nhl level and that this isnt a great situation to bring a new green coach in (green only at the nhl level).
But keefe has shown he can coach and hes been successful at it.
Youve made your point about his past and no one is gonna change your opinion.
But give him a shot.
And not 2 games.
Give the coach some time. |

Big win tomorrow night, win the next few hopefully.
I like Babs, sad to see him leave...would have been nice if he took a different role ( would never happen), I like Keefe and Dubas too, so it is what it is. - Garnie
If babcock took a new role he would have start injecting his opinion in the team and the way they are run on the ice.. you have to fully remove him. |

Put barrie with reilly.....let them go.
We know the d is bad, but lets get barrie going, get his confidence back up.
Then separate and put a responsible d man with each.

Babs was considered the best available at the time. But for whatever reasons, he lost this room. He was also very set in his ways and was a bit too old school for a lot of the folks in that locker room. We can harp on Commodore but for him to be going on about it this long after the fact regardless if he was poop or not, to me says something even if you take it with a grain of salt.
Then there was the players meetings a few days ago before this went down.
Babs ONLY thanked Rielly publicly and was ambigous with the rest.
I dont think the core of the team other than maybe Rielly wanted to deal with him any longer. I think the Spezza thing was the last straw. I mean the guy took league min to play here and was treated pooply. He lost a lot of the guys with that alone (and his past reputation) so they tuned him out. We can argue that the players are self entitled brats etc but a good leader/coach brings the best of people.
As for Keefe, he could be temporary. Kind of an unfair chance to give him, but lets see what he can do with it. At this point with playoffs looking like a pipe dream and even IF they make it, it will be another first round exit. They made the change, its time to see what transpires from it. |

Exactly. They are better off playing to there strengths until they get a system the players understand and can execute.
They play to much in the middle of what they want and what they are suppose to do and makes for too many mistakes and glaring holes. |

Mike Babcock didn't give Nylander all of that money and he is not the one that didn't trade Matthews at his peak.
Leafs fired the wrong guy. |
