Yeah but nah.
The Marlies only developed Dermott - Santo_44
Read my original, angry, drunken rant:
It's not that the Leafs aren't using their AHL team to develop players.
It's that they are doing the same as every other franking team in the league. Quit telling the world that the Marlies are so franking wonderful. Hell, there's a strong argument that their use of a bloated payroll is to the detriment of the development of young players - you've got 32 year old tweeners who are taking away ice time.
Nylander played on the Marlies. So does Sandin. That's what 1st round picks outside the top 3 do.
It's not proof that Keefe was a hockey genius. |

What's that say about the Leafs ? being 9 points behind the inferior Oilers bottom six. - Reveen
idk man. oilers are rolling.
the leafs bottom 6 is garbage.
our backup goalie is garbage.
we inexplicably have 3 of the 7 highest caphits in the league on our roster.
we just fired the coach that 2 years ago lead a team of young players to the best season in franchise history.
under him we saw guys in the mid-20's put up career years: rielly 70 points, gardiner 50 points, kadri 30 goal seasons
younger players flourished offensively: marner 90 point season, johnnson, hyman and kap 20 goal seasons, matthews Calder, top 5 in goal scoring in the nhl.
but he couldn't coach and develop young players.
we probably get a short-term boost. doesn't look good long-term, but i hope i am wrong. |

Pull a St. Louis as in multiple coaching changes and years of 1st round exit disappointments before winning a cup?

So now we are giving credit for 1st round picks playing in the AHL first?
Gauthier? Really? - Atomic Wedgie
where a player is drafted means nothing to development.

Yes really.
he couldn't skate and was barely an AHL level player. Look where he is now? That is called development.
Kapanen and Johnnson both played two seasons on the marlies.
Holl played a bunch.
Hyman played a season.
Tamishov played three.
Dermott played one and half.
Nylander played 90+ games in the AHL.

Are you sure about that?
Give me proof.
Don't just say things to say things show me proof that other teams have developed players just as well through their AHL team. |

my point was this team is more than a coaching change away from turning it around... i think Dubas needs to take some responsibility and tweak the roster |

Interesting that you can say that, yet completely disregard the Johnsson, kapanen, Moore, dermott, types. Which for the record, I wouldn't say makes keefe a genius either. I don't think anyone is saying he's a genius.
He's managed to graduate a lot of guys to the NHL, and a good chunk of them were not first rounders outside of the top 3. That's not a bad thing.
At the end of the day a fresh voice was clearly required. Keefe has had success taking teams dubas has assembled deep in the past, they're clearly on a page that Babcock and dubas weren't.
The team is trending towards the leagues taint, is doing this really going to hurt them? For (frank) sakes, he literally hasn't coached a team with the team yet and people are so butt hurt they're shovelling dirt on his casket. Welcome to leaf nation. |

Honest question - Since we are talking about development - Which ex Marlies coach did a better job of it. Eakins or Keefe ?
Cause DE did a great job of it with the Gulls. |
