I am saying it doesn't affect it much. It isn't a deciding factor. If it was, goalies would be much more predictable. I love how you're trying to be condescending but haven't spent five minutes thinking about it.

Have you ever tried formulating an argument, or are you just a pathetic troll?

- James_Tanner

This is laughable. You ask if he’s ever tried formulating a argument. But your argument starts with “I think”.
I think your special. 👍

Look at the jets and leafs, one getting great goaltending and has a far better save % while both playing horrible defence.
- Ross77

Ander7en is a below average starter this year. I am not sure how anyone can argue against that.

Where's Bill when you need him.

Actually, he's not needed since the initial analysis is so weak.

I feel dumber for even reading this drivel. I've read books in support of socialism that were more intelligent than this blog.

What does it matter? You believe coaching has next to no effect on a teams success.

Woooow, can’t wait to see how he’s gonna try to talk his way around that one. Contradictions happen when people don’t know what they are talking about

Exactly. When your overall knowledge is poor, the contradictions start to multiply.

James, I think you wrote an interesting and solid blog here.

Why did you have to ruin it by making the asinine comment that defensive play doesn't affect SV% much?

In true Tanner fashion he will just ignore it and keep pretending he has a clue.

Maybe they are just lucky? I am not saying this to pick on the coyotes. I am just questioning the blogger. Since this is the same story he wrote last year about another team. When last year it was just luck.

Because Jimmy Tan Tan doesn't believe in the eye test, and doesn't actually watch a full game, just the highlights.

Imagine if the Leafs just kept Lou as GM, Hunter as Assistant GM, and Dubas to sip on his lattes at Starbucks trying to look important. Haha.

Tanner has told us numerous times that modern cutting edge GM's like Dubas and Chayka were going to use analytics as an advantage and take over the league. Still waiting.

And dinosaurs like Lou, Holland, Tippett, Hextall had no business being in the NHL. But they stick around because it's just an old boys club that is afraid of statistics.

I know you’re a Leafs fan but Barzal, Toews, Pulock, Pelech, Lee, Bailey, Nelson, is an actual winning roster and I’ll go with them. You guaranteeing anything is laughable. I honestly can’t remember you being correct about one thing.
- Cptmjl

Ok dude, that's a better roster and the Islanders unexplainable hot streak will last forever ! hahaha

Without question they are getting lucky, as the blog before this one quite clearly talks about.

The internet has ruined the phrase "laughable."

You might be interested to learn than a synonym for "I think" is "This is my hypothesis"

also,

here is proof that I am right. *(That you will just ignore).

Haha. The article itself is full of holes and picked apart by its readers. Also, who said defensemen, alone, had an impact on save percentage. Your claim was DEFENSE doesn't affect save percentage that much. Guess who else plays defense...3 other forwards. And that 5-man unit follows a DEFENSIVE system designed by a coach. So again, compare the 80's Oilers and the Lemaire Devil's and explain how a commitment to TEAM defense (or lack thereof) did not have much of an impact on save percentage. Or maybe Brodeur was just way better than Fuhr. Where's Meltzer? Haha.

Mr. Tanner believes that players are independent of each other on the ice and will never understand the team concept.

Unexplainable that a team that was a point from winning the division and swept a division rival in the first round the prior year could be playing good again? Unexplainable only to you and other people that don’t watch hockey games.

First of all that link is more than 5 years old - not exactly the latest research in the field. Secondly he does not conclude that SV% is independent on team defence. All he says is that you cannot use on ice SV% of an individual player to determine that players impact on the goalies SV%. But no one would do that today anyway. You would use xGoals to determine whether a goalie faces tougher or easier shots than average. This is why stats experts (like evolving-hockey) are using goals saved above expected to evaluate goalies.
