If you want a guy with 3-4 years on his contract sure.
But with Andersen and Rielly needing new contracts in that time I don't see it. |

wrong, he got fired because he is a xenophobe and just can't shut up about it, its been going on for 30 years...he is too dumb to learn his lesson, good riddance. - Symba007

Talk about bs.. saying “you ppl” is not racists lol. He’s talking about ppl who came to Canada as immigrants.. Ppl’s assumptions about it being racist is more racist than what Cherry actually said. Saying he’s noticed immigrants not wearing a poppy is not racist.. anyone who called for his head is a justice worrier wall flower! Reading these comments, it’s clear that our society is hyper censored! Everyone’s scared to even speak for fear of being called a racist. And I’m no right winger saying that. It’s getting out of hand! Cherry is a Canadian icon.. I’ve never seen someone who speaks to the hearts of Canadians more than Cherry. He will be deeply missed! - JKSoule
whatever, people are fed up with the racist bigoted sh1t
You can pretend it didnt mean what it meant and try to dance around it, its (frank)ing obvious, at least own your racist bullpoop |

I see a lot more to his game.
He has quit taking so many low percentage shots which is a start. - Santo_44
If he has 70% of the success Grabner has had, I would be more than thrilled. |

I know 20 people who have canceled there Rogers cable and or cell plan already over it. Not because what he said was right or wrong but because the timing of the firing. Sorry to say but its picking up traction and it might turn into a huge mistake on there part. - Buck Norris
The interesting thing of it, is that SportsNet/CBC has Cherry on a 7-10 second delay. They must've heard it first and either ignored it or missed it. |

it'll blow over.
SN can't have a guy doing that..plain and simple.
Him using SN as a platform for that is worse for business then keeping him. |

the cause is great, he just can't help himself with blaming immigrants for everything. He did not have to go there, could have just said please wear a poppy.
He has become that old man that yells at clouds |

I keep seeing people saying, he does 1 thing and gets fired.
I said it for years, he should have been gone a long time ago. this is nothing new for him. he just forgot to hide it better |

That's the thing, there was no reference to 'new people.'
If he said, "new people coming to Canada, need to learn about..", that would have been fine in my opinion.
Let's call a spade a spade here, the comments he made implied people of colour do not support Remembrance Day, or our Veterans. - PatC80
just people would be ok cause it all of us. |

I believe he mentioned young people as well. What's wrong with saying new comers to Canada should wear Poppy's? |

Oh I'm sure they waited for the backlash.
Like they really care, it's all about the eyeballs, and once they felt that the outraged had peaked enough, they were forced into it.
It's not like it's a new thing either: it's like inviting Jeffery Dahmer over for dinner one more time and getting upset when he eats your guests again. |

If Cherry is wrong to mix politics with hockey, is it also wrong that the NHL has Hockey is for Everyone, Pride night and Black History night? If wearing something (poppy) has no significance, why does NHLcom have a full line of Pride and Hockey Is For Everyone t-shirts, hats and other apparel?

CBC does not have editorial rights anymore (broadcast only), it's all Sportsnet I heard. |

Everything in life is inherently political when you break it down enough, including sports.
The way that Don Cherry conveyed his message didn't jive with SN or the NHL |

"you people"

You know, when I first heard it -- because he's such a rambling old fool -- I didn't catch the key damning phrase in the statement: "you people... you come here...".
When I thought it was just "you people", it really could've just been the general public he was referring to and he would be right: you don't see a lot of poppies and Remembrance Day loses significance in the public eye more and more each year.
Now, I also think that people forgot about polio, hence the anti-vaxxers movement out there too.
Sometimes I think a good war and a good plague would do the world some good; would certainly help with the environment if a zombie apocalypse wiped out a few 100 million |

I wasn't sure who had the editorial rights... Still, point was that there was still a small window to edit the phrasing |

I watched it live and I didn't take it in any way as racial. It was more of quit being a cheap (frank) and get of your wallet and donate kinda thing. But everyone reads things different.

Cherry should have worded it differently if that was the message he was trying to get across. It had a racist tone.. Pointing your finger at a camera and saying "you people come here".. |
