I had a colleague from Toronto who didn't like wearing a poppy because the pin would damage her designer blouses. Typical liberal. Voted Trudeau. Had an excuse for every ethics scandal.

Don Cherry is an 85 year old man that has been well past his prime for a long time. He's said a pile of dumb poop over the years, it finally caught up to him.

The Prime Minister of Canada was caught in blackface three times (when is blackface ever acceptable?) and still has a job. Don Cherry said something that most of Canada agrees with and gets fired? Gimme a break. On rememberence day no less????

A special shout out to Sportsnet for firing Cherry on Remembrance Day. Taking the focus off what it should be about and making this the lead story.

Love him or hate him, Don was patriotic. He loved the men and women of the military and willingly gave of his time to them.

This was not an appropriate day to carry this out.

Apples and oranges

Newsflash: Rogers isn’t a democracy, they’re free to do what’s best for their business. They have sponsors to answer to, not the people of Canada.

Is there an upcoming election on who the manager will be at the Starbucks down the street?

Maybe George Strombopolopousous can come back to HNIC. He would wear a poppy, with matching skinny jeans and sipping on a low-fat soy latte. Millennial loved him!

Of all the things Don Cherry has said over the years, and this is what gets him fired?

- buffalofan19

My thoughts exactly. People can be upset that he is gone over this but the fact is, he should have been gone long ago and he has many strikes against him at this point. His segments are nothing more than the babbling of a senile old man. He is the prototypical "Old man yells at clouds"

Do I agree with what Don Cherry said last weekend? Not in the slightest. He painted people with a broad brush, with no wiggle room.

Part of the problem is twofold. First, is that those poppies fall off if you look at them funny, or if a fly breaks wind near one. I've lost so many in my day it's crazy.

The second is a more recent issue, and it's really simple: Not a lot of people carry cash or change any more, and so although we see the proud women and men of the Legion, we just don't have the literal cash to donate.

Personally, I'd rather pay a larger sum (To the Legion) for a permanent poppy, one made with the metals of your choice, with a proper pin backing so it doesn't fall off, that you can order online, or with debit, whatever.

I think the symbol of the poppy is important, and should be honoured, no doubt. Just make it easier for everyone.

My 2 cents.

- Darksyde

All he had to do was not say "You people" If he just spoke as if ALL Canadians should wear the poppies, his comments are acceptable. He is just an old man stuck in the 70s.

This!

Not that I agree at all with the firing, however, they could have privately told him to make his exit, if that’s what those hypocritical dirtbags wanted. You’re so right about Trudeau. Dude is like a wet noodle! To add an additional hypocritical example, look at Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens. Dude was convicted of MANSLAUGHTER, and he’s celebrated, even has a color commentary gig on an NFL show!! So I guess it’s ok to be a murderer, but don’t say anything that isn’t politically correct, or your career is eliminated! Liberal lefties piss me f$ck off, and I try hard to accept their stupidity!!

Justin is always dressing up in costume. He also seems to like make up. Conservatives made a huge error thinking Canadian voters would apply a US value that wearing blackface implied a racist bias. It does not. It is just bad taste.

I understand blackface has a very different meaning in the US. It is deeply enmeshed within the experience of slavery. Original slaves were brought to the US by force. Children were born into slavery. So, a large segment of the US population traces their roots to the slave tradition. The idea that Canadian immigrants would identify with the exploitation of one race by another was pure political malpractice by conservatives. Perhaps the political consultants advising the conservatives did they training in US elections. Anyway it was dumb strategy that turned out to be a compete failure.

Poppies are often 25 cents or even free with a donation of your choice, I'm sorry but the 'nobody carries cash around anymore' is a laughable excuse

If you can't even take 2 seconds out of your day to make a simple donation or simple gesture of wearing a poppy as a sign of gratification and respect to those who fight and fought to protect your freedoms then maybe Don is onto something

This implies that the only way to show respect to a veteran is to wear a poppy. That's a pretty narrow minded view point. It's like saying that if you don't have a fake Jesus in a manger on your front lawn for Christmas you clearly hate Christmas.

The true problem with today's day and age is that people like you think they are the ones to be telling everyone else what they should and shouldn't do. Shut the (frank) up and mind your own business, and watch how much better the world gets.

Even though I know he'll never read this:

Thank you for everything you did, Don Cherry. Hockey will be even less interesting without you, but you sure went out with style and honesty.

Good job, sir!

It's not a freedom of speech issue. He was fired by a business, not arrested.

I'm not outraged that he was fired on Rememberance Day. It's not Don Cherry Day.

He was incoherent 20 years ago, it was overdue.

This is a horrible false equivalency.
One guy did something 20 years ago, the other did it this weekend.

Most of Canada does not agree with him. Unless youre stuck in some kind of boomer alternate reality bubble, then it's pretty obvious people are fed up with his disgusting shtick .

I know this isnt the platform for an ethical debate, but is it racism to say "you people" when it's unclear which race he is talking about?? Over the years he's attacked Russians, Swedes and French. Seems more xenophobic to me. Anyone crying racism is just lazy, get your outrage right.
- Udogs

Yes we are over run by Russian and Swedish immigrsnts to Canada presently. Seems reasonable. False equivalence.

To further the don cherry stuff, it seems as though he was referring to people from Brampton and Mississauga near Toronto, which largely are Sikhs, not wearing poppies.

Sportsnet broadcasts nhl games in Punjabi. It a good idea to pissoff the growing fan base and is a remarkable stupid and offensive comment to make.

Also, poppies fall off all the time. I had mine fall out three times this am from 9 to 10 am.

How does grapes know why people aren’t wearing poppies? Lots of supposition on his part.

So, there was a lot of fake internet alt-right crap going on recently in Canada. One said that “the homosexuals” were making rainbow poppies and the other one encouraged the red necks and other knuckle draggers to “share this because I don’t care who these poppies offends!” Literally no one in Canada has a rainbow poppy or is offended by a poppy. No one at all. But it doesn’t stop the chest beating tubes from Alberta and the dummies who though rob Ford was a saint from getting their manties in a bunch.
