Honestly, I'm surprised enough people still watch Coach's corner to care (one way or the other)

The whole point of wearing the poppies is to show your thankful for our veterans sacrifice.... that's literally the entire point!
- Thornton22

yeah, and that's stupid.

you can be 100% thankful without buying a poppy.

The entire Trudeau blackface story was silly. Trudeau was dressed as Alladin and he put on make up to give himself a middle eastern look. I knew the conservatives were in trouble when they tried to build a story around a dumb American tactic of hyper nationalism. This is Canada, we don't care about that stuff. If I want to dress as a girl and wear make up including bright orange lip stick nobody is going to give me a hard time.

Cherry wanted to make it about us and them. This is not the Canadian way. We are better because of our diversity. We are a tolerant people. Where else could a Prime Minister win an election after repeated incidences of playing dress up, my favourite was the Taj Mahal.

Trudeau did blackface several times. He apologized, said his life of extreme privilege has left him with some blind spots ! Or something like that. Where else can 33% (2nd place) win an election ?

Almost every kid who went to a Canadian public school learned to recite In Flanders Fields from memory. I wear a poppy and honour the memory of my father, grandfather, uncles and aunts who have served in the military.

Maybe, Have been debating doing it for a while anyway.. This just gave me the final push...The fact is that what he said was not that far off and to be honest I am part of his you people rant even though I am not an immigrant... As I get older I respect and admire more and more what the veterans went through so I can live in this country today but I generally do not wear a poppy not for a variety of reasons that are not really valid.. I should wear one and show my respect.

Cancel Culture though is out of control.. I would bet you could go back to any of his other November taped shows and hear him say stuff as bad or worse that didn't draw half the ire that it did in 2019.

- Azuredoom

i think cancel culture is something to talk about for sure, but the people that talk about it the most, i wonder how much of their privilege is checked before they open their mouths. the most ardent cancel culture debaters are arguable the people that think the least about their privilege and how it applies to the debate and global perspectives of the one who fight for the marginalized more vocally.

Buying a poppy is a direct donation to veteran affairs, at the start of the segment he did make a point about his friend in Mississauga not selling poppies this year because it's been on the decline. I give him a huge benefit of the doubt that his rant was centred around promoting donations to veteran affairs by purchase of the poppy.

Anywhere with 4 or more political parties and a partisan government. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000...

It is a parliamentary system. A much more fundamental consideration should be the need for several Alberta MPs to step across the divide and serve in the Cabinet. The national popular vote is entirely irrelevant within a parliamentary system.

I sent this to Sportsnet yesterday:

"On Saturday November 9th Don Cherry made some comments during Coach’s corner that your company was quick to distance itself from and released a statement condemning his comments.
Too often in this day and age persons are regularly chastised for speaking openly on topics they are passionate about.
Your statement was obviously put together in haste to “save” your brand from public scrutiny and did not take into account Mr. Cherrys record on the subject at hand.

"Don's discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values "and what we stand for as a network," Sportsnet President Bart Yabsley said in a statement earlier Sunday. "We have spoken with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks."

Mr. Cherry did not single out any particular, race, color creed, sex or visible minority in his comments, Immigrants come from all over the world, every color, creed, race and religion.
To say his comments (paraphrased)are offensive and do not represent the values your stand for as network call into question what your values are.
Does Rogers not stand for freedom of speech as long as it is not racist, incite hatred, sexual in nature etc etc?
Does Rogers not support of veterans?

I find it ironic that Mr. Cherrys freedom to voice his opinion regarding how Canadians honor our veterans comes in question when we as Canadians are about to honor those who
fought and died to ensure we keep those same freedoms.

Lest We Forget Mr. Cherry has ALWAYS championed our veterans.
Lest We Forget Mr. Cherry has ALWAYS honored our fallen soldiers on his segment, often coming to near tears.
Lest We Forget Mr. Cherry has ALWAYS made it a point to visit and broadcast from the Canadian memorial at Normandy.
Lest We Forget Mr. Cherry has ALWAYS honored our first responders when they have fallen or been gravely injured.
Lest We Forget that WE as Canadians have the duty to stand up for our Veterans and active military personnel.

Perhaps in the future you can try to remember the good a person has done and what they stand for before when writing a press statement ensuring you make mention of these qualities."

Now today...….
I will no longer be watching their broadcasts, using their apps or supporting their brand in way shape or form.

Bullpoop planet we live on.

Lest we forget

What a joke sportsnet.Good for Don Cherry. Said his peace and stands behind it.Very rare these days. The society in Canada and America has become soft .The sad part is he is right. It goes much deeper than buying a poppy. But that is for another thread.

maybe ... but I'd bet that immigrants aren't the only ones not buying poppies.

Considering you are in the U.S. where every 3rd house flies an American flag and your country is by far the most patriotic one on the planet you would think you would understand honoring the military.

Most Americans just don't get it. Canada is a tolerant society. Cherry survived as long as he did because we are so tolerant, even of his bad behaviour. Nobody is glad to see him fired. We feel badly that it simply became a bridge too far and finally someone said "enough." Truth is he just got too old and said things that nobody cares about anymore. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who stopped watching his segment on HNIC.
