If Cherry would of said that 30 years ago, no one would of said anything, I still remember Harry Caray's rant when he was with the White Sox after Jorge Orta dropped a pop up:
Caray: "Ya know, I don't understand it. The last couple years, we've had Latin American infielders who've had trouble catching pop flies. First Luis Alvarado, now Orta."
Sidekick Bob Waller: "I think he lost the ball in the sun, Harry."
Caray: "Aw, how could he lose the ball in the sun? He's from
Mexico." - LAHawk
Nah that's a little different. Cherry was calling out immigrants as freeloaders that come to the land of milk and honey in Canada but don't wear poppies and aren't supporting vets. An apology would be fine, not sure about firing though.
It's a shame Caray can't make a statement like that anymore.

... point of order- excepting it wasn't the CBC that had employed said former coach but Rogers Media.
Look, I agree with the sentiment of donating for poppies on Remembrance Day, ANZAC Day, whenever Legacy is collecting (ok not poppies, there but it is the same idea).
I play on a club over here that has a lot of ex and current ADF guys, and train and scrimmage with WA ADFIHA - it's been a big privilege to be involved with those guys and the first responders that make up a big part of our club.
But -yeh, ok so it could have been worded so it was more of an inclusive type of supportive statement, but I think criticizing the basic sentiment... not sure on that one. I think it is the proverbial double-edged sword. - SC116
You'll have to clarify these acronyms for those of us that live below the 49th parallel.

BTW, I couldn't find one Salvation Army/American Legion kettle out here in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills to even buy a poppy, let alone half the people didn't even know it was Veteran's Day. Probably 90% don't even know of the poem Flanders Field.

Part is it is they don't give the kids the day off too I think. They should have it off given the Post Office and all government offices were closed. They need to remember that our very freedom and that of the world was at great peril in WWII and how we protected it in Kuwait.
Back to hockey... Man I hope we finally beat the Knights Wednesday. Pens snapped the streak against so hopefully we are due. |

My sense is that Burish would quite willingly carry on the crazy suits tradition. |

Would it matter that he is not Canadian? I understand they have Americans on the NHL network, which is primarily for US consumption, but Rogers Sportsnet is mainly a Canadian audience. |

And also WW1, which 11/11 is the day the armistice was sgned ending WW1.
OK off my personal rant, now ready to discuss hockey again. |

Mine goes to Gustafsson.
If Rogers makes him a good enough offer, maybe he'll just retire as a player. |

The exact quote from Keith re: his insisting he had to play on PP before re-signing with Chicago. I would find it shocking if they actually put that role for him in a written guarantee, particularly for life of contract. Why wouldn't you at least put performance related stipulations in there, e.g., must score more than one goal every 10 games to retain position or something?
Keith: "In the contract negotiations I told my agent, I'm like, 'I'm not going to sign any deal unless I'm getting an opportunity on the power play.' And so then, the next day I was on the powerplay."

Yeah, I was just joking. I expect it WOULD matter. He's close to a Canadian being from WI, but not quite... |

Even in the Hawks glory years, they never really had a dominant power play.

How about you? You're (Your) Canadian and slightly more coherent than Cherry. I bet you've got a closet full of bad suits too (two). - HawkintheD
I threw out a sofa and managed to use the material to (two) (too) make two (too) (to) suits, one three piece (peace). |

And if not for the worst rule in all of sports they would have won in OT. That offside challenge/review has to go. When it’s by an inch I say just let the goal stand. - SimpleJack
Sure. And if a pitch is only an inch off the outside corner, let the ump call it a strike if it fits ‘his’ strike zone. If we’re going to allow plays that are only an inch offside, how about 2, or 3 or 4? Exactly where do you draw the line?
Offside is black and white, it either is or isn’t. |

Pretty easy for DC to make it a positive rather than negative comment.
‘I wear a poppy to support and remember all the courageous men and women who have fought for Canada, to preserve our way of life. If you’d like to support and remember them too, go out and buy a poppy.’
Done, simple, positive.

Huh? He's apologizing because Cherrys comments alienated a group of people who buy their advertisers products. - BetweenTheDots
All he had to say is he is fired because he said things we do not believe to be true. That is not an apology. The firing is the action that appeased the people that felt alienated. |

Plus, on this particular play, his forward momentum carried him towards the puck carrier. If he had to stop at the blue line after his teammate fell down, he may not have been in position to receive the puck and score. Even an inch or two on a play like this could make a big difference.
Conversely, plays like what happened to Col in last year's playoffs should not result in a goal being overturned. If you don't remember, Col scored against SJ, and SJ challenged because a skater getting off the ice after a line change still had a skate on the ice inside the offensive zone when the puck crossed the line. I think there should be some discretion involved, but I'm ok with the challenge. If discretion is involved, maybe they could change the rule so that if the play is offside, there's no penalty, but the refs have final say in whether or not the goal is overturned. |

What's the truth? Immigrants aren't as patriotic than non-immigrants? Immigrants need to step it up and buy more poppies? That's a pretty ridiculous leap of logic and is a DB statement. - Popsghostly
What's not so funny either is, i don't know if it's like this in Canada, but we celebrate our veterans and enlisted folk everywhere, unfortunately and not much coverage of this, our own government treats them as meat. They barely get the mental health care when they come back from active duty, many of the medical facilities are piss poor, first responders in the military can't even get a job as first responders in the states because they didn't go to school and jump through hoops and pay a non, cough cough, profit organization for a piece of paper. Just look how our 911 responders had to fight for their healthcare benefits from Congress. Disgrace |
