Between blackouts, random no HD feeds, and random away feeds, I have no idea why anybody would still sub to that package when the alternatives are not only free but more consistent quality.

Last night’s game was available on the NBC Sports App as a free game, whatever that means.

It is a garbage stat. If a forward gives the puck away in the slot and the opponent scores off the shot, everyone gets a minus, If the goalie lets in a weak goal, everyone gets a minus. If you are on the ice when you pull the goalie to try and tie the game, everyone on the ice gets a minus. If you play a guy in defensive situations, he is more likely to be on the ice for a goal against. None of this has anything to do with a specific players play on the ice.

So it's a coincidence of Braun being unlucky when he's out on the ice?
His +/- was the worst on the Sharks last year as well. More bad luck. Got it. It couldn't possibly be Braun is an ineffective defenseman.

My personal code of ethics prevents me from using those alternative methods.

I think what you're missing is that the players really determine that.
- MJL

When did I say they didn't?

What coach wouldn't elevate Myers ice time with the way he played in recently?
- MJL

But would they have elevated Sanheim's TOI along with his? After the week from hell that he just had? Most would have just bumped Myers up individually.

What coach wouldn't play a PP unit that is producing more than the other unit?
- MJL

Flyers have been living and dying by PP1 for how many years? Shuffle one net-front or high-slot guy for another -- PP2 was basically a personnel feeder system into PP1. PP2 would get 30 seconds per PP whether PP1 could score or not. Therrien/AV have kept the forward units intact for the most part.

You're comparing a coach who has coached the Flyers for 17 games.
- MJL

This is true. We'll see if AV develops some baked-in loyalties. For now, it seems like he's pretty open-minded.

All fair points. I think he's kinda redundant to Hagg. He may be marginally better than Hagg, but just not worth making the transaction to acquire him.
- PLindbergh31

If Hagg and/or Morin were RHD, I doubt they would have made the trade.

Your comment said it. In respect to how more fluid Vigneault is. He has more options at his disposal. More players that can match up. It's a shift by shift basis. The Myers/Sanheim pairing was put together and they their play on the ice dictates their ice time.

Yes, because they never had a PP2 unit as good as they have right now. Konecny has advanced as a player. It's gone largely under the radar but a big part of the 2nd PP unit's effectiveness has been the play of Niskanen. He is a steadying influence with the puck and distributes it well and helps with breakouts. In years past the 2nd PP unit had a lot of trouble just getting set up. Again, the players play decides the ice time.

I don't know about that. Here is the difference between Braun and Haag. Haag needs to be highly sheltered in his deployment. While Braun can take more of the heavy lifting and hold his own. Haag cannot handle the deployment that Braun is placed in. Morin was unproven as an NHL player.

Hakstol did nothing wrong, every decision was the right one. Get on board.
- jmatchett383

i was watching the nhl network last week and they were mystified, absolutely befuddled at the degradation of the Toronto pp and pk. I sure as poop wasnt. In one word Hakstol. He was a terrible coach in my opinion. Actually liked the guy as met him a few times and chatted. But thought he needed more pro experience before he could handle head coach position. His and Hexy's communication skills sucked, and dont underestimate how that crap messes with players heads. that he liked to play incompetent aging veterans over promising youngsters was just at the top of a long list. I rarely yell at the tv like i did last few years over coaching decisions since AV and team arrived. small sample size, but i like AV and team a lot. we may not win a Cup before he is fired, but the players seem to know where they stand with him.

And Hayes is a -6. Is that a reflection of his defensive ability? Can you tell me how many of those minus were when he was playing tough minutes with Provorov against?
Can you specifically mention how every goal against was his fault? How does his role on the team affect his +/-? He isnt used in offensive situations and he is a stay at home Dman meaning he is not a big point producer. He has a whole 3 points.

That puts him at -15 in 17 games which is less than 1 goal per game.

On the Flyers coaching staff, which coach handles the PP? Which coach handles the PK?

Rangers fans were irate that Vigneualt played Tanner Glass over younger players. Babcock has benched and demoted young players to the 4th line.

PP2 mostly only got one shot at entry before they were called off the ice. Hard to establish anything under those circumstances, even with players like Coots, Sanheim, Prov, TK etc.

Agree, Niskanen has been good for the PP.

Obviously with the current team, PP1 comes off the ice quicker than they have in years past on previous teams. That is at the direction of whom? Would that be the case if the 2nd unit was not effective. Again, the players play dictates ice time.

Whether it's 'sharing' or giving in to anti-competitive corporate practices, we're compromised either way.

If they provided equal services, that would be one thing. But it's crazy that the NHL is losing to reddit in terms of quality and user experience.

Toronto's woes have nothing to do with Hakstol. Their PP hasnt changed. First of all, all the Toronto stuff is way overblown. Fans are freaking out while they currently sit 2nd in the Atlantic. Leafs were 11-6-0 last season at this point in time. They are 9-6-4. Aside from the fact they lost Marner and Barrie is playing worse than Gardiner, the Leafs are fine.

Again, a new coaching staff 17 games in and earlier experimenting on what works best. Any idea why you think they put Gostisbehere back on the first unit recently?

The Leafs are going to be fine and win a lot of games. I personally think their roster is flawed. Too top heavy and their defense is thin. They lack depth through the lineup. Their stars also have to adjust and play differently.

I'm not a fan of the way the NHL does a lot of things but they impressed me yesterday with regards to CI.

I signed up for the streaming service last Thursday so I could watch the Montreal game. Signup was easy and they shouldn't be blacked out in my zip code. Yes, I checked again before signing up. What do I find when I try to watch? It's blacked out. After two contacts with the "help" desk it was determined that my ISP was making it look like I live in a zip code that is blacked out. (Why that zip code is blacked out is beyond me as it's even farther from the Philly area than my zip code.) The "help" desk folks said they couldn't do anything for me so I emailed them and complained that I signed up for something that they can't deliver so I wanted my subscription cancelled. [crickets] So game time last night I checked and it was blacked out. I was po'd again. I called them up to complain and cancel. Explained my story to the very nice guy who answered. He asked "if you could watch Flyers games would you still want to cancel?" Of course not, that's why I signed up. He put me on hold for about 5 minutes. When he came back he asked me to try again. Poof! The game was available. He didn't explain how did it but he said he reviewed my account, apologized that it wasn't taken care of sooner, and made it be so I won't be blacked out. Score one for the NHL.

Had I needed to cancel I wouldn't have been happy but I also wouldn't have turned to pirate media to watch.
