Cherry didn't actually say either.. The rant started with "you people come here". Which is wrong.. should have worded it differently if he didn't want to offend anyone.
- PatC80

My Grandparents came here years ago after ww2, I dont know if he is talking about them or not.

I dont think they wore poppies much. cant really remember, maybe they did.

His whole shtick is old and tired and should have been off the air years ago

Yeah I don't get why people are so outraged. It's common knowledge that Don Cherry is a crazy old coot that likes to use his position and platform to promote his crazy outdated opinions, nothing new here.
- TheMussel

The vast majority of the outrage is coming from whites that want everyone to now how they are't racist because they can point out racism in other whites. It's a daily routine on Twitter.

he is quite bad.
he is a fringe nhl backup.

- MaximusAurelius

I think he's doing a fine job as a backup.

He won't be anything else than that, but he's clearly better than what the Leafs have had since Mcbackup left.

They fought so we don’t have to buy poppies..

I used to buy poppies, now I don’t.

- Arctic_AARDVARK

I agree. Shaming people into wearing a poppy is utter hypocrisy.

I thought as society we moved beyond all the tribalism/nationalism stuff..

It’s divisive. Most bumhole Canadians I know are established white people

That’s what old ppl/boomers do, it’s what they’ve always done. Casual racism and maintain the status-quo. People don’t like change because they’re most comfortable with how things are. But young people will always want change, it all depends on who holds the balance of power, and boomers are in a very peculiar situation..

- Arctic_AARDVARK

go to Africa, and people there want to do their stuff in their 'as always' ways as well.
xenophobism isn't a white thing.
it's normal big groups of people want to maintain what they know and what they value.
and it's normal as well if you put 1million muslims in a non-muslim country, they group together and want to start doing their things in 'their as always ways' as well. that will cause conflicts because the receiving population doesn't like that.
then the 'racism card' gets played.

the only other goalie apart from Georgiev that makes sense would be Scott Darling.
that's would be a high-risk, high-reward bet..
(not sure whether he's mentally recuperated from a very bad season last year..)

- MaximusAurelius

No it doesn't.

Racism doesn't quite work that way. That racist owner of the LA Clippers had a number of black people on his team, too. His diversity hire percentages were fantastic!

On one side, I get the point that a newly landed immigrant to Canada shouldn't be expected to understand the ramifications and traditions, and certainly not the emotional and familial ties that most generational Canadians would. That said, you simply can't generalize because you don't know. The statement groups one set of people into a negative light while simply ignoring whole other groups of Canadians who didn't have to "come here". They were born here and many even have family histories that have been terribly affected by the wars - and many young people are losing touch with that.

Simply put: he shouldn't have generalized it to immigrants because they are not the problem here.

- Monkeypunk

he simply should have said - that all Canadians and all people who want to be Canadian should learn about Canada's history, its traditions and why certain holidays exist - what they commemorate. Remember Day exists for a reason - find out about it. Support the veterans and the memory of veterans passed.

So Don Cherry isn't racist because he has a black friend?
- Scabeh

But black hockey players deep down are white.

Didn't you know this?!

3-3 on a terrible Kings team. Hutch 0-4-1.

Canada wants to be diverse.

We want people to feel comfortable in participating in their cultures.

It goes too far sometimes but it will never be perfect.

Yeah, he could have easily used it as a learning opportunity for new people to Canada.. HNIC is a pretty big platform to get your message across.. Cherry just sounded like an ass-hat.

This is true.

Signed for 2 years after this one. I’d definitely say it’s an option. It’s fine either way by me though, traded or not. I just want to see Petersen up and stay up.

I saw Campbell in previous seasons as well, including some AHL games (recaps). WC as well.
He's just very meh.
I agree he's better than Hutch - but Leafs actually need a guy that can play more than 20 games.
