No goalie in the NHL has faced as many high danger shots as Hutch. On average this year, Freddy faces 6-7 a game. Hutch faces 12.

It basically comes down to this, Hutch is who he is, but he was set up to fail...

- Hockey_Reverend

Exactly.
The leafs hung him out to dry.

And there's the rub...
- Hockey_Reverend

Right, but it's easier to waive the goalie, instead of changing your coach/roster during the season.

Hutch hung the leafs out to dry.

He’s not an NHL caliber player.

For sure. But its too bad that Hutch was set up to fail this year. Unless he stands on his head, do we win that game?
- Hockey_Reverend

he drops the puck, mishandles it and lets out rebounds into the slot. that's where half the hd chances are coming from.

last night he left fat rebounds out in the slot and looked like a beached whale trying to get across the the net at times.

he's not an nhl goalie.

Exactly.

No one is arguing that they haven’t played the best in front of Hutch.

But Hutch has been awful, plain and simple.

The worst team on the league every year still doesn’t have a goalie that puts up those numbers.

Similar to when Reimer was here. He had such bad rebound control that the stats got fudged. Teams would get more shots from dangerous areas because they get the puck in places they never should, if the goalie would just hold onto the puck or direct it somewhere not directly in-front of them.

Only difference, Reimer had the athleticism to make a save every once in a while. Hutch doesn't.

They have always played poor defense, but I think Hutch faces more because the team ends up opening up to try and catch up. That's the ripple effect of being a poopty goalie.

He probably also faces more because it's the second half of a back-to-back and also the team doesn't trust him and they aren't good at defense, so when they fall into a shell, it's looks like some of that play last night.

He's not the worst backup in the league, but the type of goalie that he is, the style of the team that he's playing on sure doesn't benefit him.

- Monkeypunk

definitely a combination of both - substandard goaltending and substandard play in front of the goalie.

hopefully the GM doesn't escape some blame here.. I know I know GM WonderBoy.. can do no wrong.

truth is

1) Dubas didn't manage the CAP well enough to leave himself room to acquire a decent back (and some other areas of need)
2) Hutchinson didn't do enough earn an elongated shot
3) team has sucked in many first periods or at least at the beginning of the game

hope

that the team isn't let off the hook "because Hutchinson sucked"... 'cause that narrative is exactly how the Leafs overspent to acquire Nelson Bernier.... blaming Reimer for the 2013 Game 7 collapse - just like then - the team in front of the goalie bares plenty of responsibility

Hutch did not hang anyone out to dry last night. How can anyone watch this team night in and night out and see the inept defense and say 'its the goalie'?

He needs a reset for sure.
He needed to stand on his head behind this weak defensive leaf team and he just couldnt.
Leafs need a back up goalie similar to andersen....someone who can cover for the teams inept defensive play.
Not sure they have the cap for that unless they get lucky.
We'll see.

If the Leafs player better hockey in front of him he’d have some wins. Freddy saves this teams ass every time he plays.

Hutch is the new scape-goat, but the issues run much, much deeper than the backup goalie.

I’m listening to Bob rn, he’s saying it’s bullshït the way the Leafs rely on their goalies. It’s unsustainable.

Keep drinking your goalie koolaid.

You can’t put all the blame on the Leafs here.

Yes, the leafs haven’t payed great in front of him. Fact.

Hutch has played just as bad behind them. Fact.

There can be two problems here.

Hutch isn’t an NHL goalie and that’s something they (frank)ed up on.

The team didn't play well in front of him and that 3rd Hawks goal was a total team failure..
In his 6 starts, he's shown he is not good at rebound control and has a slow glove hand.. We need someone better.

He also said Hutch probably isn’t an NHL goaltender.

So combine what you said and the last sentence I said.

Yep KOOLAID

Of course it would have been nice if he turned into Hasek, but really? People in here blaming him?

It is the same story in Toronto for 15 years. THEY CANT DEFEND. But hey, now we have Barrie cause clearly what we need is more offensive guys...

This is correct.

I’m convinced people don’t actually watch the games, and if they do they instantly forget every time the Leafs give up an odd-man rush, breakaways, high % scoring chance, let players skate in on their goalies unopposed etc..

That’s how people seem to view the game. It doesn’t matter as long as it doesn’t go in the net, and if t does it’s the goalies fault every time. Because you’re absolutely correct, this is 90% a team defence issue, and 10% a goalie issue..

ding ding ding!

a couple of the team's offensive leaders had great nights last night... so their stats look awesome - team lost

its all good! zone entries were amazing! Leafs win the NHL Zone Entry competition!

check the spreadsheets... its all in the spreadsheets

Question to the group: can you provide a cheat sheet that allows the "Boomers" to understand the finer points of the spreadsheets - I want to when I should ignore the zone entries in favor of stuff like wins and losses - I always get confused with that stuff.

BTW, as I’ve said on countless occasions this season, I’m not sure Hutchinson is a capable NHL back up goalie but playing him only in G2 of back to backs in front of a team that collapses in front of him, well...

Yes.

He has been bad.

We aren’t blaming him. Simply stating he has been awful.
