Last 15-20 years, I watched all/most Leafs games Saturday (starting 1am CET where I am located) and quite a few other games. Never had any issues with staying up for the games - even during the really really bad seasons with bad teams, bad coaching etc.
This is the first year that I just cannot be motivated to stay up for the game.
This team is really broken - lots of talent, but lack of heart, and bad attitude. In addition, very bad managed lineup - with glaring weaknesses going unaddressed (and actually made even worse) by the new GM and management overall.
Apart from getting good players while drafting high (difficult to miss with 1st, 4th and 8th overall) a lot of other decisions really didn't pan out well (backup goalie - we had McElhinney; Zaitsev was way better than Ceci; Barrie is an unneeded asset we gave up a lot for; etc.).
Babcock is a good coach - but management should give him the right players to win with.
So far, that hasn't happened with trading for the wrong guys, and keeping the effortless on the team.
It seems true that some of the players on this team aren't a good fit for Babcock's playing style and Dubas' hockey philosophy.
One could argue to get a different coach in.
NHL past results actually argue for getting rid of some of the effortless players, and only keep the ones that are willing to give it all to win a Stanley Cup.
In my view, that even includes considering trading a player like Matthews. The guy is a top 5 player in my book as for talent, but not sure about his character.
This Leafs team and management is just a disappointment, it's missing the excitement factor due to the fact that there is a lack of effort, in combination with the 'I know better' mentality of the green GM.

Stop making up crap just because you personally hate the GM for some reason.

Still got to play better in front of him, we zzzz for a few mins every game and just allow teams freewill.

Agree with you Garnie, but that first goal was extra smelly. Smelled like poo, and it takes the wind out of the sails when a goalie lets in a cheap softie like that off the hop.

Yes he did, and it still was a softie that went into the five hole on the first shot on net. - winsix
Meh,
He was trying to get across the crease to save the one timer that was coming, ceci tipped it in. It wasn't a shot on net that was deflected, it was a pass across the crease that ended up getting tipped into their own net.
The leafs were non existent in the first. Where the hell has the team that played last 15mins of the game been all year?

I agree, you as a former goalie probably have a much different perspective than I and i respect your view. I believe the Leafs play very tentatively when Hutch is in the net, until he stands on head and steals one, I doubt that will change. Overall a weak team effort all night. Playing great in the last ten or fifteen minutes is a like a crap team padding their stats to finish just out of the playoffs. Every team uses the same tactic against the Leafs, hit them hard, they're soft, and they will turtle.

Nothing wrong with Rielly, he can't do it all. Need some shots instead of fancy passes that get picked off. #floatafewmoreatthefreakingoaliealready - winsix
He doesn't look nearly as confident as he did last year; he's not working the blueline on the PP, not carrying it in with poise, lots of weak wristers from the point...
... which seems to be the Leafs modus operandi this year: I don't know how many OZ possessions were wasted with low-percentage point shots that never get through.

This. I think it starts with fixing the impotent PP.
Every team plays the 1-3-1, but it really relies on the point guy to be dynamic and open up lanes.
Rielly is so static and everyone knows he's just going to make the obvious pass to Matthews so teams are loading up that side with bodies to block his shot.
The next "fix" is just (frank)ing play the best line the most. It's not that hard; 34/88 are hot right now, and Babcock goes on to say this last night:
@markhmasters
Babcock on the Matthews line: "They were dominant ... I played them way too much, but they were dominant & they played well"
Auston played 21:56 tonight ... career-high 4 assists

Somebody pointed out he's missed a bunch of practices, so he's gotta be playing hurt, so I'm giving him a bit of a pass, but he has not looked good this year.
Take Ceci away from him, give him Holl for a few games, play them a bit less, play Dermott and Barrie a bit more, because Dermott looks way more confident and dominant out there and has always been better defensively.

It must be quite a few former goalies in here - we all know they're even more crazy than the average hockey nutter...!

Agreed with everything except playing Barrie a bit more. Please dear God no. I'm starting to miss Gardiner and i hated Gardiner

Last night we had zero urgency before the Hawks scored, I’m going to pick on Nylander for a second, but he’s not the only 1. Our 1st PP there’s Willie trying a 1 hand pass across the blueline almost looking like he tries to do it without looking like he’s trying ( offside 1st unit done )...then a shift later a dump in where he chases the d without taking a stride...once we were down 3-0 he was back checking and forechecking like a bat out of hell.
Anyways....terrible start and all the analytic guys will point to the GAA or Sv% and blame Hutch...
And i know, it would be nice to get a save in the 1st 5 shots.
On the bright side, they (frank)ing took over the game after they were down 3-0
