So intolerance and fear are the hallmarks of a healthy society?

I highly doubt that's what Aristotle meant

- jcragcrumple

Oh, right.. Aristotle was a bleeding heart liberal who clamored for more immigration from 3rd world countries, the desolution of societal and traditional values, and was a huge proponent for the LGBTQ community.

Opinions vary, in fact, the opinions I saw on line were pretty even. It is just those who were offended went way off the deep end with claims it was racist, xenophobic, etc.
Who knows what he really meant, except for him.
The rest are inferences made based on his past comments.

I agree that it was/is more of peop,e frustrated over the years and had enough is enough.
Wonder what George Orwell would think of our modern times, truly I do.

While I do think this is an instance of Cancel Culture becoming a boulder gaining way too much momentum rolling into the village at the bottom of the hill, there was very little doubt as to who he was referring to. To insinuate otherwise seems more than a little intellectually dishonest.

I don't stand behind the firing, that doesn't mean I agree with what he said.

But to see the equal, yet opposite, boycott movement come out to punish SportsNet financially for disagreeing with them and firing Don Cherry.

I mean, don't you see you're doing the same thing you're chastising SportsNet for? It's not the principle you're fighting for just the outcome.

This goes back to my earlier point. They should have just ignored it. When companies end up apologizing, they end up getting hurt by both sides. They already enraged the first side by Cherry's comments. By apologizing, now you've caused the group defending you to stop doing so. The best play would have been to ignore it, bear the brunt of the criticism for 3 or 4 days, until the Court of Public Opinion finds something else to be outraged about.

Should NFL players who kneel be fired for their political stances?

I'm not going to base my thoughts of modern immigration policy on the 2400 year old immigration policies of the Greek city states any more than I would base it on Don Cherry's ramblings.

As for the societal values, the Greeks had slaves and I'm not gonna even get into their LGBTQ views, which would make Mayor Pete throw up

I think that sums it up.

Look at it this way, you fire Don and one side is cancelling their service. You apologize and keep him, the other side does as both sides love the boycott thing.

Then you're stuck with the pragmatic decision of examining which side represents more market share. Typically these aren't principled stands as corporate social responsibility's selling point in textbooks, in part, is the good will you garner with your target market. So if the largest buying group wants you to do X, provided it's legal and ethical, you do X. But make no mistake, if there wasn't a "cancel culture" on both sides, I doubt we're hearing about any behind close door discussions the network would have with Cherry. Now it's his firing.

Always a bad idea to read historical values through contemporary lenses. I can assure you 2400 years from now what we value will be considered abhorrent.

Should they? No, I don't think so. Does the NFL have the right to mandate it, though? Yes, it absolutely does. And the public has every right to criticize it for doing so, or not doing so.

I have not read one person opposed to the firing say that Sportsnet should be fined or forced to hire him back. They're saying it's a bad idea. That's the difference.

Nope. I don't like their take, and I think it's demonstrably false, but I don't think they should be fined.

No, I'm saying singling out a particular group was an unnecessary choice. He could have expressed righteous indignation at the broader decline of the tradition without yelling about immigrants. Like I said before, probably not everyone understands the tradition or knows if they're supposed to participate. Just explain to people why you believe it's important

Alright. Grapes is right and the slave-holding pederast ancient Greeks would be appalled at the current state of 21st century canadian immigration policy

So, what you're really saying is, you cannot find anything specific in Don Cherry's comments that could be deemed offensive by any reasonable person.

So essentially the country that reelected president blackface is offended by one of their longest serving, favorite sons asking immigrants to support the troops. The snowflake ratio is high up North. They should change from "We the North" to "We the Offended". Make it happen Chairman Blackface!

please do not try to use context and framing because it does not support my position THANK YOU
- robz228

Context is literally the most subjective word in the English language. The context of the situation I would give is most likely 180 degrees from yours. That's why context is useless. Don Cherry was fired for Don Cherry's words - or so we're told. Which words specifically and why? Defining offensive by stating "that's offensive" is as big a logical fallacy as one can have.

Except the English language is entirely context dependent. Unlike some languages, Koine Greek for example, which employs words to mean VERY specific things English needs context.

Fire is a perfect example.

If you're freezing in the winter about to die, someone yells fire and you're elated because the heat will save you. If you're standing at the other end of a firing line with a blindfold and a cigarette and someone yells fire, it's a bad day.

Same word, two different meanings. Context is crucial.

Carbs are basically the killers once you stay away from those you're good and then you can detox your body

clearly there are no facts here which is why people disagree. the context adds to the overall picture as to why the decision to fire him was made.

if you are choosing to plug your ears and scream NO CONTEXT ALLOWED, you must not have a very compelling argument
