I don't disagree, but when you're a public figure going on an off-topic rant about it, chances are it won't end well.

Its not some great injustice in the world that people with a platform have consequences for using it to attack an ethnicity.

Just don't be an bumhole. Not that hard.

I actually think the smart business play would have been for Sportsnet to ignore it altogether. Today's society has a short attention span. In about 3 or 4 days, there will be something else for the social media crowd to get outraged by. Instead, they managed to piss off two groups of people, those "offended" by his comments, and then the other side who was "offended" by the apology and then eventually his firing.

The same thing happened with Lloyd's Taco's when serving at the immigrant detention center, with the apology, and then the apology for the apology.

Contrast those two instances with Chik-Fil-A for instance. Some people got outraged about them donating to whatever that group was. Chik-Fil-A didn't apologize or even stop donating. In fact, they doubled down. They're no worse off than they would have been had they apologized and gone through some sort of PR circus.

I've had people of color tell me it's offensive. I've also had people of color tell me it doesn't really bother them much, because they have bigger problems to worry about other than what some white idiot does at a halloween party.

The people this stuff bothers the most is the social media mob, which, in reality is a small percentage of the population, albeit a very loud one.

- buffalofan19

The world we live in is crazy. Black people can call each other the N word to each other and it’s a friendly term. Then the N word from a white person is bad.

A black person calls a white person a cracker. It’s okay and not offensive.

I accidentally at the gym said “are using that bro.” (Squat rack at the gym). It ended up being a girl who had shorter hair than me and looked like a legit dude. She got offended. How was I supposed to know?

The reality is ..... everyone gets offended by anything and everything.

By continuing to employ him, they would have guaranteed him another opportunity to say inflammatory things either related to, or not related to, hockey. They made a decision that it's best not to deal with his poop anymore.

FWIW, I grew up watching CBC HNiC and I used to love his segments when I was like 10, because he would always talk directly to kids and say, "Now kids, watch this, on this play, player x does the right thing..."

There are also levels of getting offended, though, that are tolerable, and those that aren't. It's one thing for the girl to get offended (though probably not all would) and call you an bumhole. It would be another if she got so worked up, went to a manager, and demand that you be removed from the facility. We all know that in today's day and age, both kinds exist in spades.

There are other ways to get him out of there. They could just as easily not renew his contract at the end of the year. They look hypocritical because this is not the first time he's done something like this, nor is it the worst thing he's ever said.

That was rather unnecessary on my part. It would have sufficed to say "people hate to see the world change." Don cherry just happens to be old

I think it just looks like the guys act was tired and played, and management said “enough is enough”. Whether this was his worst offense or not, or whether or not it was even an offense, they didn’t want to deal with the headaches he causes.

the context and the person who said it matters. cherry didn't have any benefit of the doubt of what the intentions were behind what he said.

context clues = he pretty much said immigrants need to assimilate or gtfo

- robz228

At least you can pay a couple of bucks for poppy = assimilate or get out

When someone cannot express frustration with disrespect to his cultural traditions for reasons that equate to HE IS WHITE AND WHITE PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED A CULTURAL VOICE you embrace monolithic thought synonymous with the likes of Stalin, Hitler, and Mao.

Chik-Fil-A thrives off brand loyalty. There are people that swear by their product. I for one, rank it slightly better than Wendy's, but not enough that I need to wait in a 1-hour line for it (I also haven't eaten fast food from anywhere in months unless you count Subway). At one point, they set off a firestorm, and rather than apologizing to the mob, they did nothing about the outrage. Their brand loyalty, at worst, was unchanged, and at best, even increased. It's actually one hell of a case study.

Here's a rant that doesn't get him fired:

"Ya know, I've noticed that not as many people are wearing poppies as they used to. I want to take a minute to explain why they're important to me, and why they should be important to you too. Yadda, yada, yada"

Again, I am still waiting for a specific reason why what Don Cherry said was offensive. No one has provided one. Lots of squishy, subjective words like "context" are being thrown around. Utter trash. Good, hard logic requires specific words and definitions. Don Cherry's words got him fired, so somewhere in those specific words someone should be able to point out to me what is offensive.

The word "context" does not appear in Don Cherry's comments, so leave that useless word out of your specific definition of why Don Cherry's comments were offensive.

It's also a "rant" that nobody listens to. That's the hilarious part about this. His rant probably got Sportsnet more coverage, eyeballs on the screen, and hits to its website than it has all season.

So you're saying he was fired for mentioning 1. where he lives and 2. where he works? The two places he sees 99% of the people he encounters on a daily basis. That's pretty authoritarian of you.

No, I'm saying singling out a particular group was an unnecessary choice. He could have expressed righteous indignation at the broader decline of the tradition without yelling about immigrants. Like I said before, probably not everyone understands the tradition or knows if they're supposed to participate. Just explain to people why you believe it's important

At first I thought you were talking about global missions...took me a second....

Then, I'm like......true...it's toss up.

I mean, we are talking about spicy chicken right? The plain...not so much.
