Me too. I actually asked Mirtle for clarification in one of his Athletic articles a couple of weeks ago.
LTIR is bizarre. One of the key things to remember with it is that it's not a contract state at all; it's application for relief that is contingent upon 3 conditions being met: (1) The player is out for 24 or more days, (2) the player is out for 10 or more games and (3) A player has been acquired or called up to replace that player.
So if you look at that, the acquisition of Clarkson and Horton happening prior to the signing of Marner was good, because it meant that they could allocate most of Marner's salary to Clarkson and Horton's collective LTIR pool. because he was the "acquired" player. - Monkeypunk
the way to game ltir is the way the hawks did a few years back with kane.
kane went on to ltir just before the tdl. that move opened up his caphit of $6Mish at the time.
they added players and had no room to bring kane back on to the roster ..... until the playoffs when the cap goes away. |

Putting Marincin on waivers is the NHL equivalent of putting a 27 year old cloth couch onto the curb on a rainy day |

It's the one criticism I have of Dubas' summer:
There were at least a couple of creative things he could have done on a Ceci contract.
- offer him a contract with most of it payable on Day 1;
- try to get him to go to arbitration so the Leafs could walk away.
Instead, we have a guy making $4.5 million, counting $4.5 million against the cap, and playing like a $2 million d-man. - Atomic Wedgie
great assist last night though |

Would have been nice if we could have kept Fedor Gordeev, too bad we couldn't sign him. - PatC80
does it make sense to sign Marincin AGAIN - which he did the summer - after having acquired Ceci, Harpur, Gravel...
and then trade away a kid(your own draft pick)?
some in the wonderful collection of personalities ridiculed me for complaining that Dubas signed Marincin.
but this is the sh__ that makes me wonder... yes, the kid isn't the greatest skater... he's a kid...
so you throw him away yet find room to save the new "Thicker" Martin Marincin.

I like this... but you forgot to mention that the sofa has cat scratch marks on one end and huge food stain in the middle.

Fedor Gordeev
where is he? dont see the point of signing him to not be good enough to make the Marlies
Marincin was at least able to fill in when needed. Harpur sucks worse.
a whole lot of who cares |

Signed for two years.
He is an NHL talent.
He chose to get the guaranteed 1.5 million.
It might keep him out of the NHL. |

People like to complain that the Leafs have 8th and 14th forwards in their 50 contract limit. |

I think if you take a look at most of his gaffes, they fall right into that category that I presume is the "being hard on the puck" type. Yesterday he's making that play - hit the puck like it punched your mom. Whack it to the boards. A soft play in front is not going to help. You're in danger and you're pressed - ice the puck - don't try and chip it to a tired stationary teammate in the D-Zone. Hit the puck like it drank your last beer. - Monkeypunk
That was my line of thinking as well... You're in front of your net, you're under pressure, just fire the puck high and hard.. |

I was hopeful that Gordeev would be here in the next 2-3 years because of his size and I thought he would only get better defensively. The eye test made him look good, who knows.. Upper management knows more than I do though..
The game has changed a lot, but you still need physical stay-at-home D-men and some agitators that can maybe chip in a goal or two..
Maybe Babs convinced Dubas to re-sign Marincin?

It's a bit weird, IMO... We are 9-5-3, and according to some we've sucked for all 17 games.. What's gonna happen when we start to play well? |

he was a 5th round pick so a lottery ticket in draft terms.
he was in such demand the Leafs were able to downgrade to a 7th |
