Pronger - Final at 32, Cup at 33, Final at 36.

Elite defensemen don't fall off a cliff in their 30s. Some play very well into their 40s. The Norris Trophy has been awarded since 1955. 30 out of 64 went to somebody 30 or older. Giordano just won it last year at 35.

If anything, you don't want Tavares at 30+ because goal scoring takes a dip at 30 but he's here until he's 35+ too. What mitigates that is him playing with Marner, the same way Rielly would mitigate Doughty's age.

The positives far outweigh the negatives with Doughty. He's still in his prime, he's an elite RHD, he plays two-way hockey, he's a proven winner and he brings experience that the Leafs don't have. He hits, he blocks shots, he kills penalties, he shuts down top players and he can skate for days. He's not 20 but he's not 40 either.

Doughty, like the others listed, is the best of his generation and that's not going to stop at 30. It may seem that way because he's stuck on a poop team but he's far, far from finished.

Even if he falls off a cliff at 36 or 37, that's a small price to pay for what he could produce from 30-35 which is a Stanley Cup. That's worth it especially when you consider there's nobody else out there in the Leafs system or available anywhere else.

The Leafs were patient and rebuilt but at some point they have to roll the dice and make a big move to fix the defense and there aren't many better rolls to take than this one.
