I think it's tough for a guy with his talent level and at his age to play like every shift is his last. That's usually something that comes with time for most players.

Far less potential so he's just another player to use as a means to an end. He's more useful to the Leafs as a trade chip to improve the defense. They have enough other players who bring what he brings and bring it at a higher level.
