Duh. Who else would he be looking at? He’s the only Hawk prospect with a French name.

It’s so obvious.

- Ogilthorpe2

Isn't Toews mother french?, and Toews speaks the language? And of course Crow, but Price makes way too much money to have Crow as a back up.

He wasn’t scouting the Hawks though, he was scouting the Freezer Pigs.

Bergevin was there looking for a sweetener, we need to add to send Shaw back for our 2nd and 3rd that we previously gave up.

I don't think Bergevin needs to scout Toews and/or Crawford. I just don't see Stan doing a Poehling for Beaudin deal, unless it is part of something bigger. The Hawks have 9 new players in the line-up, I think the next trade (if there is one) will be a big one that includes significant pieces, instead of tinkering around the edges.

But Weber signed a Hossa type contract, so the cap hit would go back to Nashville if Weber retired early (except for the actual $'ss paid which goes to Montreal).
- LAHawk

You're talking about a recapture penalty. The cap hit to the Hawks would go away were he to retire. It is still a gamble that he'll retire near the end of his deal.

I think it would be a major error to make that trade for the Hawks.

Remember when he was taking regular shifts to start last season?

Can't argue the forward talent is a lot better this year.

Hmmm. Would we have to throw in D-Cat, who we got from a pick in the original Shaw deal????...this is all getting very confusing...

I thought Boqvist like to carry the puck out of the dzone. I know it has only been 2 games but I haven't really seen him attempt to do that. Is that a product of the system or is he just playing a more conservative game as he gets his feet wet in the NHL?

Also the Hawks PP yesterday was atrocious at times. I've never seen so much miscommunication in the dzone during a PP. I think it was mainly PP1 that had its clown shoes on.

I was just wondering, if we were playing man to man defense wouldn't each player be on the hip pocket of the opponent? Dmen along the blue line are always open? Theoretically i envision man to man to mean you are not covering an area you are shadowing an opponent and i just don't see this.
- BetweenTheDots

Think of it as a man to man defense in basketball with a lot of switching.

He and Dach can be 1 and 2C. Strome and Toews can be 3 and 4C, where they belong.

NHL refs are horrible. They decided when and when to not call certain infractions. There is no consistency. They single handled the dictate how a game is going to be played.

NFL officials aren’t as bad given the rules now are a compete joke.

- bhawks2241

Agree NHL refs are totally arbitrary. They don't even need to watch the game.

The thing about the refs I hate is the internal clock they have. If they give 2 penalties in a row to one team within a short span of time, especially if it causes a 5 on 3, you know who the next penalty is going to be against, no matter what happens on the ice.

Also the goalie interference rule and how it is inconsistently applied is a joke.

- LAHawk

That's why i keep saying it doesn't matter they are going to call penalties on someone, Shaw, Carpenter, Toews or others on this team.

Just got to keep playing well on the PK. It's just when Toews came out of the box and virtually did the same thing, it was like watching the Bears d line jump off sides. Frustrating

I was trying to figure out if the Hawks called up Dylan where he could fit into this lineup, and they only way that will work is if the bumped Kampf down to the 4th line with Shaw, Carpenter, and Caggiula. Which, if those guys are fighting for the bottom three spots then that means the rest of the guys are playing as good as they should be and you have a very deep forward group.

Hopefully JC keeps the guys together over the next few games to continue to build some chemistry.

Either a deep forward group or else they all stink.

Weber's cap hit is $7.86 for six more years after this one. He is currently 34, so the cap hit stays until he's 40.

Seabrook has a cap hit of $6.88 for four more years after this one. He is also 34, so the cap hit stays until he's 38.

So, 1st four years, cap hit is a million higher. Then two more years at $7.88.

Weber's contract does only pay $1M the last three years, so he could retire. But that's a huge gamble. His buyout doesn't look any better than Seabrook's.

Where will Dach and Boqvist live if Seabs leaves?

Smith and 4K are about to have hamstring injuries in practice. They will run into each other.

I'm not saying he is above criticism, but I think a lot of the complaints about Toews and the refs is misguided. I've watched a number of other teams play in the last three weeks and literally every team has a guy that yells at the refs (not always the captain).

The Hawks are not playing all that well, and he hears about it after every game, and has to try and find a new explanation. If he doesn't give any reasons for the poor play, he is "disconnected and doesn't care". If he does give reasons for the poor play, he is "making excuses".

Add all that up with the fact that he is not producing and frustrated with his own play, and I can easily see how he would be mad at a lot of things during the game. Should he back off the refs? Probably. Whether intentional or not, at some point the refs probably would be more critical of his play if he continues. But, he is not really doing anything different than all the other teams.

The good news with his next penalty he ties Shaw for the team lead, but if it's a high stick and draws blood, oh yea

I think we should focus on the positive. Toews is finally growing into the defensive, physical, 3C this board always envisioned him as.
Too bad we had to overpay him by ~9.25M per year to get him there...

Looking at the Hawks shooting percentages and it appears most of the top guys are below their career averages. Would have to assume that evens out at some point.

Everyone, except for Strome, is at or below 10%.
