Correct. Yet they are still in the league and have an opportunity. Hossa had to come to that core which were all homegrown talent. He had to join Kane/Toews because he couldn't quite get it done on his own anywhere with some other talented homegrown groups...including his own in OTT

Get them a competent coach would be a start, because they have more talent this year then they have has the last 3.

- PatShart

I've been blaming the players all year not the coach. On paper they are much better than last year not even close. At some point you have to say what we are doing isn't working and say it before it's too late! "The System" I would argue has been given enough time these aren't rookies trying to implement it. We've reached the point either change the system, change the coach, or change all the players. We know how that scenario usually goes. You can't force a system on mis matched players that doesn't work. The clock is ticking louder every abysmal game. 8 shots in two periods against the worst team in the conference. Hello!

Or maybe if a guy is struggling with accuracy you give him bigger targets instead of running plays in zone coverage where the #1 option is 5'4" dude.

Mitch definitely misses passes long and high but if he had a legit 6'3" NFL WR instead of gabriel or cohen running those routes we would see more completions.

- bhawks2241

I wondered that as well. When they have Gabriel, Cohen and Montgomery running routes...not exactly forgiving if/when the QB struggles with accuracy as it is. Isnt that Wims a decent sized receiver? I dont understand either why they switched Daniels and Whitehair at G/C. I thought Whitehair was above average at C and I dont remember this poor of line play/pass protection last year with nearly the same exact line

Last year the D was prolific at scoring and giving the O
a short field upon which to score, this year that aint
happening.

- gazza53

I agree on the defense. But Mitch had a QB rating of 95.4 last year. This year it is 80. Last year he ran for 4 times the yardage he is on pace for this year. He was fairly effective last year (again, far from great), and awful this year. The coach just has to own some fault for the decline.

Not saying it is the coach's fault he's not Mahomes. But it is partially the coach's fault he's not as good as last year.

Well said. I think similarly. My question is whether the vets are not able to play under a different system, or that they don't want to? The answer is important because the next coach is unlikely to use Q's system from years gone by. The past several years shows that system wasn't getting them to the postseason. Will they cry and go home if they aren't the de facto coach? Or are they really committed to trying whatever is asked of them?

From the Sun Times so not exactly expert hockey guys but...

"Last season, the Hawks were at the forefront of a movement toward transition offense, leading the NHL in percentage of entry attempts that were carry-ins. But this season, with Jeremy Colliton’s emphasizing a conservative, defense-first system, the Hawks have shifted more toward dump-ins because they limit opponent counterattacks."

Seems to me the opposite is happening. The dump and chase hasn't improved the defense and it has killed the offense.

both the eye test and stat test confirm this...my gawd...

I mean I get what you're saying to an extent, but they're not playing the same system they were last year. They've gone from playing a possession style of game to dump and chase which does not suit most of the guys. You can see that by the repeated play in every game: opposing team gets puck, Hawks chase for 30 to 90 seconds in their own zone, get the puck, move to red line, dump the puck in, change, opposing team gets puck, repeat. That's on the coach.

The effort of the players can be questioned for sure. Seems as though there's a lack of respect from some of the players with Colliton. Kinda hard to command respect as a coach when you're the same age or younger than some of your players and they have three cup rings while he has none. This is why having the Core with JC is hard to work out. They would have been better served to hire an experienced head coach for the reminder of the core and when they walk away give the job to Colltion. Bowman shot himself in the foot with this one.

No way. It was McD, who sources tell me advised Pace during all relevant times.

LOL, I sat at the table next to McD in a local Steak Joint a about a week or so ago. It was amazing how many people recognized him and just ignored him. Had it been in a cup run he would have people flocking over for pics and autographs. BTW if you ever want to send him a drink he likes Coors Lite.

Haven't watched every second of every game, but what I see, is the defense for the most part cannot complete a direct pass to a skating forward, so how can they play a transition game, with the total inability to transition?

Outrage queued.

Unless Kubelik is injured - how does it help this team - now or in the future - to put Smith in and Kubelik out?

Lets get slower because we are playing a faster team, that makes sense.

From the coach:

Dominik Kubalik is getting benched tonight, which is interesting. Smith subbing in.

"We think his play's dropped off a little bit. We want to get him back to where he was playing earlier. Sometimes rest and some feedback can do that."

I think there is a roster spot available after sending Gilbert down - and Rockford is a short drive - why not bring up one of the “usual suspects” for a game?

I don't necessarily have an issue with the move. He has been less visible lately. The only real issue is that we don't have anyone better than Smith to sub in.

If they don't change anything, it's all just deck chairs anyway.

they get stuck in their own zone and can't get the puck buck...here a typical hapless shift for these guys...no clue
