But the overwhelmingly most frequent usage, which Ion meant to use, is the opposite of “debatable.”

You were right the first time. Debatable + Irrelevant = not worth debating

Yeah, you're both right. It means debate is useless, and we usually think of a debate as having merit

It’s a very bizarre word. The English language dictionary defines it to mean “unsettled or open to debate”

But in the law, if a issue is “moot” it is because the issue was already settled and there is no reason to debate it any longer.

Most people think of it in the legal sense. That’s the sense Ion was trying to make.
