He did get a little better at his all around game. Not much but he did.
Trotz told him you do want I want you to do defensively and you do what you want to do offensively. Seemed to work out fine. - LeafGuy89
well id hope after 10+ years in the NHL he'd learn how to improve "a bit"
again the point I'm trying to make here is that OVI didn't change much, his team improved and he was the sniper. he didn't have to change much, but I'm not sure why he's bragging like he changes his entire game so the caps could win. |

I think he changed, somewhat.
The thing is, he was always a beast. Yeah he scores a lot from the same spot, but Ovechkin has always had a very physical edge to his game that no Leafs players have.

He did change his game.
Became less selfish.
Hes a cup champ, one of the best scorers in the game. He can say what he wants.
This soft leafs team needs to hear it |

nothing like the leafs running into boston who won the cup or capitals who won the cup
and ovi has always shot a lot and always hit, he's still in the same spot shift after shift and sits and waits for the big blaster. that's his game. - Lucas.Neilson
It always baffles me how he finds a way to be left alone at that spot.
He must have scored over 250 goals from there, you'd think someone would be on to him. |

Ovie was spot on in his assessment. Ovie has had his share of disappointment over the years before he got his cup! No he hasn't had to change his game dramatically but he has adjusted. There was a lot of Summers that he was reflecting after putting up big numbers but was called a no-heart Russian who can't win when it counts!
I certainly didn't take his comments as a dig, I actually think Ovie kind of likes the Leafs and is pulling for them to get it together. He definitely sees a lot of similarities in the Leafs from his earlier years in Washington. He wasn't always a 200ft player and still not sometimes but now he knows when to do it and when it's not required...hence the PP. He hovers around the dot because he knows and the team knows that's it's pretty much money every time he wires it from the point! You don't fix what's not broken! |

The Caps team that won the cup that year was not their best. In fact their GM had said the summer before that it might be a little bit of a down year as they had spent a lot of assets the year before. It was a complete buy in that got them there. Idk if you like +/- or not, but Ovi was a +8 in the playoffs |

Well when their is another guy (Carlson) that has a rocket of a shot as well. It makes it more difficult to cover both!

If it didn't happen at EVS how was Tavares a -5, Marner a -4 and Hyman a -3? - AdamFrench
Who uses +/- anymore?
It's all about the amount of goals that your team scores at even strength when you're the ice vs the amount of goals that the other team scores at even strength when you're the ice. That's the real data we should be capturing. |

Agreed. And if this continues then the next step is for feelings to be hurt. Call some individuals out ...Shanny put them on blast in the dressing room.
Also have to wonder if Ovi should/could be saying the same thing about Tampa, Calgary and Winnipeg. All playing below their level. |

Yes we do, but i like his idea better.
Feb 2nd, 2020 - Leafs at Rangers
6-4 Leafs. Matthews x 2, Snakes x 2, Nylander and Kerfoot.
Leafs blow a 4-0 lead in the 2nd, but recuperate just in time. |

Agreed. Tavares on the post, Johnsson, Marner and Rielly with softies ...makes Matthews an easier defensive assignment for the PK.
We miss Kadri's underated snapper from the crease. Willie has a great shot but he doesn't use the (frank)ing thing. |

Nope, because there would probably be some push back.
Imagine a guy calling out your team, basically saying you're selfish and you don't have a clue on how to win.
Then you get a chance to push back and prove to said guy he's wrong.
Then said guy's team beats you and said guy scores the winner. |

That's why we need Barrie on PP1.
So the focus is not solely on Matthews.

If it aint broke, dont fix it...there is a reason hes on pace to best literally the best goal scorer of all time. He doesnt need to change offensively because hes the GOAT goal scorer
He changed his game defensively. Look at his career progression on the defensive end of the ice. For the love of god people do your research |

As for Ovechkin…
He wasn’t so far off on his assessment of the Maple Leafs. They do need to play more of a team game and concentrate on all aspects of the game and not just scoring goals.
As if he cares if the Leafs win the cup or not. He was refering specifically to Matthews here seeing as he's one of his competitors for the Richard Trophy - sly old commie.
