Pete, I thought you were just doing your best Chevy impersonation by disappearing for a bit!

Good luck in your future endeavours and thanks for the insight and conversation over the years.

I am watching the Oilers Columbus game and its been reported that Buf had surgery today on his wonky ankle and the earliest that he would start to skate would be around the new year.

They also talked about frustration on both sides and the team being extremely patient on not voiding his contract. I don't know what Buf would be frustrated about, maybe someone can enlighten me on that.

So, there you go.

Buff? Probably frustrated because he's suspended and not on IR - and not getting paid.

If Byfuglien was interested in coming back, he would have had his ankle operated on in the summer and had the team put him the IR. He would have still collected a paycheck. As Westwood said on the radio this morning, he is not interested in playing hockey. Otherwise, he would have the Jets doctors rehab him and put him on a plan that would have expedited his return to the line-up.

I said last year we should trade Byfuglien while his value was high and all I got was flack. How ironic! I wonder if his rights would be worth something in a trade.

Just a few notes on the Jets.

Niku and Beaulieu may be back shortly which might help shore up what has been a pretty bad D to date and the bulk of the Jets problems. (that and the lack of a decent right side PP quarterback and not being able to properly replace our PK unit from last year).

The one noticeable takeaway from the Anaheim game is that Ehlers and Roslovic work very well together. The speed and puck control by both of them can be mesmerizing at times...especially the speed on the rush. The dilemma is what happens when Laine comes back because he can't match that speed. Roslovic is clearly ready for a second-line center role IMHO.

My suggestion is to put Laine back with Sheif and Wheeler. Drop Little to the third line. The second line can be a speed line of Connor - Roslovic - Ehlers. Little can drop to third-line center with Lowry and Copp. The alternative to this, because it would be nice to have a natural right-wing as part of the equation, is to go this route :

Ehlers - Scheif - Laine
Connor - Roslovic - Wheeler ( still a very fast line)

The Jet on this team that is very expendable in a trade is definitely Perreault. Shocked he still is here as he accomplishes next to nothing for his salary. Lowry is getting there.....zero points for a center on any line is inexcusable after thirteen games.

So now that Peter's blog is dead I assume this is where we post for the next little while until someone like Garth writes a new blog or another writer steps up to the plate. Despite some guys privately asking, it will not be me.

Jets eked out a win last night thanks to Helle. If there was a couple of other positive takeaways for the game it would be that Wheeler's slump looks to possibly be over. He played with a lot more passion last night.

The other takeaway ( which I've touched on previously) is that Ehlers and Roslovic belong together on the same line. It's very difficult to find those certain guys that gel together because sometimes it doesn't always happen right away. For those of you who have played the game you know that it takes time, or sometimes a different team before you find that magic with someone. Roslovic and Ehlers have that. They can both keep pace with each other, rag the puck, have excellent vision, and seem to really feed off each other both on the ice and on the bench.

Little has been a pretty good strong support veteran as the third . He does those unnoticed things like his veteran stick work early on that led to the third goal. When you hear Maurice always talk about being strong on the stick, this is a great example of what he means.

What happens when Laine comes back ? Laine isn't going to want to play on the third line and nor should he , after demonstrating his new drive this season. My recommendation is to keep Roslovic on the second as the center and let Little play a third-line role and up the minutes of Copp-Little-Lowry. That would give the Jets three very strong forward lines.

Once again Jets are .500 . I'm still waiting for the 20 game mark to pass judgment on where they stand. Adding Beaulieu and Niku to the D-corps will make a difference. Bye-bye Bitetto.

Pretty much agree with everything you're saying here, but it's sure going to be difficult to break up the Ehlers-Little-Roslovic line now, finally found some chemistry on the 2nd line. Not sure that the Jets consider Roslo a Centre, but would be nice to give him a 10-game shot, or whatever, there.

Agree with Bitetto, but not sure it will be "bye-bye" as he seems to be one of those guys that's a coach's favorite, no matter what everyone else thinks. But certainly hope you're right.

Jets should be establishing a top nine. If Laine can be placed on a line with Copp and Wheeler it could make for a dynamic line. It all depends on Maurice to get out of his archaic thinking where there is a top 6 and bottom 6. We have the talent to spread out our wingers to make a top 9 and bottom 3.

I respectfully disagree Ultimate. It generally doesn't work that way. The third line needs to be that physically grinding line that can play 12-15 minutes a game wearing down the opponent's top two lines. Also as you start mixing up players from different lines for the Jets PP and PK it causes real problems. In your example, you might end up with guys from three different lines on both the PP and PK. All three guys on that third line have to be primary PK guys while the top two lines make up the two units on the PP.

Just commenting on two positives:

1) Hellebuyck having a slow season start and then began trending upward. At the start, everyone including the pundits were asking questions but he has consistently delivered better and better performances in this early season. And a big bounce back after the Anaheim game to commit road game robbery in SJ.

2) Starting to see the growth in Roslovic. I watched him in the A and he has never looked as confident in the NHL as he did in the A, but, I think he is growing more confident in the big leaque. He is really starting to get into the corners and hang onto the puck and his edges are way better now as well. Experience, maturity, age and time in general developing will likley see him just become increasingly more confident of his skill. He will only turn 23 in January. A ways to go yet but looking better all the time.

So I guess you are okay with guys like Roslovic, Vesalainen, Spacek being grinders? There is no space for those guys in the top 6.

I just watched the Elliott Freidman segment on Buff. Maybe he got the story from this blog because I broke it here first including the relevant text from the CBA.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/...s-going-dustin-byfuglien/

We actually don't know if Buff is upset as Elliott says. He knew coming into camp that he wanted to retire so suddenly changing his mind and going to arbitration because he found his foot was broken seems a little after that fact ish. I hope the NHL stands its ground on this as the waivers were signed in black and white. You can bet going forward that players who might think they have something nagging them at seasons end might want to get their own second opinion from a doctor before signing off.

Another great comeback from the Jets in Vegas. It was a game I had planned to attend but couldn't make it. The Jets are showing some real perseverance of late. It's late so I might post some more thoughts on the game in the morning.

Yup, that's what i was thinking. I was going to head off to bed and thought I will watch a bit more, then Perreault scored, then Scheifle on the very controversial goal, then Connor finished it off.

Gallant was so po'd, it looked like his head was going to explode.

San Jose is 4-10-1 and sitting in second last place in the entire NHL, up against the cap and missing their first round pick this upcoming year in a “deep draft”. Couture is also 30 years old and probably has the most value for a franchise that is looking more like they would have to rebuild as opposed to adding another piece or two.

Like I said it might be something to consider.

SJ paying Karlsson $11.5 MM for the next 8 seasons is looking like one of the biggest bonehead moves in the last few years. Since he signed in SJ we really haven't seen Karlsson play at a level that's anywhere close to the value of that of contract. Just look at all the defensive blunders he made against the Jets. Apparently these are becoming a regular occurrence with him. He is -13 and scoring at a rate of .75 pts/game. At 29 years old and fragile with a rebuilt ankle, one wonders where he might be about halfway through that contract.

This is exactly my point! Don't get me wrong, I love Karlsson, but that contract has really put the Sharks in a bad spot. It seems that all the Calfornia teams are struggling. They do though have lots of pieces that could take the Jets over the top. I keep hearing that the Jets are one of the youngest teams in the NHL and as such would not worry if we were to move some of those pieces to make upgrades at Center or another position that we identify as being weak. This is where Chevy needs to be a Parriah and take advantage of a situation.

SJ screwed themselves by giving everyone NMC and M-NTC where they can only be moved to 3 teams.

Hertl is about the only player they can move and the thing they would want from the Jets is Heinola or maybe a Roslovic, Samberg combo, and the Jets would only have him under contract for 2 years.
