But Gonchar is the defenseman whisperer.

Then maybe he should speak a little louder if they’re not hearing him.

Well, I guess the better question is what do you NOT want from us?

I may be spouting a completely incorrect, unsubstantiated opinion, but hasn't JJ generally looked better (including having better possession numbers) when he's been paired with Gudbranson?
- mdub71

Yes, I agree JJ's been better with Gudbranson than Marino and the numbers back that up.

Gudbranson is probably better right now, at least at defending, but neither he nor JJ offers much upside in the other end.

Marino has the promise of that and possibly a complete player, but right now he should either be getting shelter minutes and you live with the mistakes hoping he improves or he should be playing heavy minutes in the AHL. He shouldn't be playing with the guys you need to carry the team right now.

For about a second I thought RW was going to just compliment JJ. I must have had way too long day.

I think one issue with defensemen is that it takes them longer to acclimate to a new team/system. I remember Gonchar being pretty bad the first entire season he played for the Pens but then much better after that.

Maybe JJ will have a rebound season, relatively speaking? This is not to say that he is good - he is not. His contract is horrendous and the long-term impacts of it will hurt the team even more than it already has. However, perhaps this season and next season at least he will do better (again, relatively speaking - I don't actually expect him to be "good") and will be pretty reliable in the third pairing.

I have a feeling that the 2021-22 year of his contract will be brutal, though. At least after that a buyout becomes more feasible.

If it takes you more than 2 weeks to acclimate to a new system you suck at hockey.

Here’s my issue with moving Schultz. While yes, he may be overrated and will likely get too much money next year, replacing him won’t be easy and I’m sure Green is almost done.

Is Schultz even a net positive in terms of on ice impact?

I honestly haven’t dug deep into his stats thus far, but from the little I looked he’s been trending up after a rough start.

Gonchar was the second leading scorer with 58 points on the Penguins his first year. He was not bad. The Penguins were bad.

It's a contract year, so maybe. Ask again after we get a 2nd line for him to get the puck to.

Green has a rel xGF% of 12.2 and Schultz is at 1.52 so it looks like Schultz is done.

So why do you want Schultz? Wouldn’t you just take the third? The Pens can probably move Schultz in a secondary deal for other assets.

4 of his past 6 seasons will have been contract years. Let that sink in for a second...
