Yup, he played like a pretty average backup.
- gravyface

He made a lot of really good saves. His positioning is pretty good. But holy (frank) he should have a shock collar on if he ever leaves the crease.

And his rebound control is Reimer-esque.

He wasn't magnificent but if the logic at play is that he cost us the game, that's a stretch at best.
- joel878

I didn’t say he cost the game, but he wasn’t good when he needed to be. Bergeron line just own the Leafs, but people saying Hutch played good need to recheck their braille.

Yup and why he's a completely average backup, despite what Uggle the Muggle wants to fit his 20/20 narrative.

That for sure was a big part but Hutch was absolutely useless.
- GreatGigInTheSky

In general he's a pretty useless goalie yes lol. Below average backup imo

hutch wasn't good but for sure he didn't lose them the game. their star players completely disappearing was the main issue. bergeron etc yeah yeah. still true though.
- daeth

I will defend that top line a bit by understanding the Bergeron line is the best in hockey, and would still be okay if they didn't get any points, but absolutely no possession or dangerous chances was pretty disheartening. Like they could have at least had a couple good shifts, maybe a post? But it really wasn't good.
They did okay limiting them to only 1 goal though. Not many lines can even do that much.

So I had to watch the Boston feed for the last period. Edwards actually said something that made sense. He said Toronto has to much talent and that's what's hurting them and they are way to easy to play against from the hash marks to behind there own net and teams are figuring this out and focusing in on it. Hem them in there own end for stretches and it doesn't matter how much talent ya have. Ya can't score from there.

You're not wrong by any accounts, but hanging a loss on the backup goalie is such an easy out. If the teams top players did their job, if the coach did his job... The backup goalie isn't a part of the story. His job is to give them a chance, and it's tough to argue he didn't.

Matthews, Marner, rielly being relative no shows, making costly blunders when opportunities were presented is the story. Babcock being his stubborn ass self and refusing to split Matthews and Marner when it was clear they weren't doing squat after the 1st is the story. I swear I watch Toronto Boston games just to see Cassidy put a coaching clinic on Babs every time.

Would it be that much of a stretch for me to say Ceci has been more serviceable than Barrie to date?
- joel878

Barrie hasn't been all that impressive. Better than Z was the past few years, though.

I watched Matthews and Marner take offensive zone faceoffs and end up hemmed in their own zone within 10 seconds a minimum of 5 times tonight.

But the coach refuses to adapt. He's still playing his run the same poop to death plan like its 2007 and it will eventually work.

Babs needed to break up Marner Matthews.

I see nobody saying much about Nylander who wasn't much better than the others with much easier competition.

Hyman and JT would help things immensely. Also, Rielly and Marner have been sub-par to start the season; you then factor in our depth, and it's a different game.

If Bergeron or Pasta was hurt, would Jack be saying the same thing about the Bruins?

I liked Johnsson's game. Always have. That 2nd penalty was a joke. He had a strong game, IMO.

I actually thought Willie was way better than either tonight. Which is part of why I was screaming for him to give up on Matthews Marner. Willie generated numerous chances.

Play him against Boston, who you haven’t been able to beat with Freddie...

Yes, I'm with you. It was atrocious. He did bail himself out a few times, but if he played the puck right he wouldn't have to. I just don't think it should be the story at the end of the day... Because it takes the guys who should be accountable off the hook.

You guys ALWAYS come around, always..
