At first, I was wait and see on that deal. The more I think about it, I find it hard to justify. The only thing I can think of was that they weren't sure if they could get de Haan, and the Maatta deal came up. He made the deal for Kahun, then de Haan came through and Stan had too many NHL D-men.
In my mind, Kahun and Nylander are about the same player. I would have much rather traded for de Haan, and kept Joki. Maybe there was something else gong on there, but it boggles the mind a bit. |

Silly question, of course he has. I haven't seen Nylander hit, block a shot or win a face off. The guy is useless and a total bust. |

But I read somewhere that he does deadlifts next to a puke bucket... |

It will be a wonderful day for me the day they trade him,
You have players who are part of the solution
Meh players
Players who are part of the problem, Gus falls in this category - BetweenTheDots
Where does the offense come from on the Dcore? Who plays the top PP unit? Who jumps up on offense as a threat and gets shots from the point? You wanna trade away a guy that just put up 60 pts, checks off all those boxes, and has an incredibly cheap contract just a few games into the season??? |

Because with this coach, lack of team structure, inability to match lines in this division....they arent going anywhere
They'll be sellers...and Marc Crawford will be running the ship by seasons end - PatShart

Nylander is without question a more skilled offensive talent than Kahun and it’s not close. And his ceiling is MUCH higher. Kahun might be a better bottom 6 player but we already have plenty of those. With a boatload of top defensive prospects ready to hit the NHL within the next year or so and a need for top end forward prospects/young talents to plug along side 19/88 or Cat/Strome it boggles my mind how some still don’t see the logic behind the Joker for Nylander swap. Solid trade for both teams. Nothing to complain about, especially considering Nylander looks pretty good so far and will only get better. |

Nylander on a lower line has allowed him to have success in the fact that he is going head to head against 3rd pairing defensemen. He has played hard and you can see his confidence growing. Hopefully it continues because he does seem to have some high-end talents. Outside of Dach and Nylander, the Hawks need some more forward prospects with a lot of upside so it is very encouraging to see Nylander produce and look good so far this year. |

Mitchell and Bovquist who are arguably the closest are both right handed, Murphy is right handed. Matta and DaHaan that are signed for the same term as Murphy are left handed. Hopefully in 2 years Beaudin, Gilbert?, Vlasic will be ready (Vlasic next year again in college, signs plays in Rockford one year and hopefully is ready the year Matta's and DaHaan's contract is up. - LAHawk
Mitchell hasn't even signed with the Hawks yet. I assume he will, but who knows. Boqvist replaces Gus on the roster. The other guys are down the road a bit - if they ever arrive. I'd move Murph if one of them actually pushes him out, not because I think they might some day. |

I understand why they did it, and I don't have an issue with Nylander. I actually like his game, but I thought that Kahun would be just as productive (I'm happy to eventually be proven wrong). My issue was that we had a young cost controlled D-man who showed well and was still growing into the position (who also had some chemistry with Keith). I know they have a lot of prospects, but he actually showed that he can play NHL minutes. |

Seeing the line of Strome-Dach-Kane should be enough of an idiot move...and there's many
He takes his #2 C in Strome, 51pts in 58gms...and splits him from Debrincat (who has sucked since the split) and puts his slow skating at W (where he was a ghost)
Then puts Dach on that line with the now ineffective Strome and Kane - who draws every tough matchup from the other teams, because their coaches know to put good D players vs the other teams best offensive player
If they wanted to break Dach in at center, he should have been put between Saad and Kubilak. Those 2 have been driving the play for their line and it would have been easy to give Dach 10-12 sheltered minutes with 2 guys that play responsible in all 3 zones

Of course you will.
Because you cant justify the brilliance of that line....so deflect.
What exactly has he done/implemented that has worked well? |

Definitely good idea to keep trying to force what is non-existent chemistry on line 1 and again saddle our biggest offensive threat with mentoring a "raw" rookie and covering for Strome's issues...sigh - pdx2ord
They scored 3 with new line combinations.
They gave up 5 including a PP, SH, and EN. Changing 5v5 forward line combinations will probably not effect the players on the ice in those situations.
I am ok with giving the same group a 2nd look. |

but surprisingly Nylander has played well on the 4th line

I agree, and the fancy stats showed the Hawks 5 X 5 outplayed the Caps, who are far from shleprocks as far as a team goes.

The team has been steadily improving game to game while adapting to all the new players, and last season they improved drastically after JC took over and almost made the playoffs.
So there’s that...

But the majority of the Hawks top prospects are D men, they have a lack of depth on young Grade A prospect forwards.
