Anytime you have a chance to add the best player in the world, you make that move

Continuing our great debate from the last thread, the only change I see at the deadline in terms of defence is bringing Sandin back up.

We can't afford to do anything else.

- Atomic Wedgie

I agree. Dubas seems to have set his roster for the season already and doesn't want to mix it up midway.

Well, if they knew where he lost the money - investments, real estate etc. they would report it. Money up and vanished like a fart in the wind. Hookers? lol

Sometimes people stop listening to their advisors because the person pitching to them makes it seem too good to be true and "is a nice person".

True. He did do some good stuff later in his career and is fine now. I think Tockett literally gambled his money completely away during his playing days.

Average athletes are broke 5 years after they are done playing. I know that's NBA but unsure of other ones. I'm pretty confident it's a low number regardless.

People don't like to think itll run out and too many people around just feeding the ego, lifting the person up to keep making bad decisions.

The NHL (and NHLPA) do have a pension plan.

https://www.investopedia....thlete-pension-plans.aspx

True Wedgie Story:

A friend is a money manager. One of his clients is a former NHLer - still active in media (everyone here would know his name).

At the start of his career, his agent set the player up with a financial plan - which includes an allowance.

The player (now ex-player) gets X amount a year - and not a franking penny more.

Player agreed to it at the start, still loves the plan, and is happy and financially secure.

- Atomic Wedgie

Thanks for the link Wedgie - quite a good article and verifies that the NHL pension plan is pathetic. There are a few issues here, including greedy and slimey managers, but the fact that most of these NHL players did not have a decent formal education, especially when it comes to finances and business is an issue. In addition, if the player comes from humble beginnings, just like the lottery winners that are broke withing a few months or years - the money is very easy to blow with all the temptations available.

I disagree, the TDL is 5 months away. It very silly to be saying this already.

If they want to add to the defence then guys like Ceci can be traded away to make the cap work.

Regardless, it’s way to early to be talking about adding or not adding right now.

This is just stupid enough to work. Make it happen, Dubas.

Weird thing about Kappanen is that when he plays on the 3rd line, he looks like he deserves to be at least on the 2nd line, when put there, he looks lost! Just as well keep him on the 3rd line so he'll look like a 2nd line player!

If you can't include bonuses...probably doesn't leave much to gain if it's 1 of our big dogs anyways.
- Garnie

Could that be the reason Ceci wasn't given a bonus heavy contract....like I've heard people whining about around these boards.

Seems like trading Ceci wasn't a concern....although by the TDL only a portion of his salary is still owed vs the Cap hit.

So seems to me that Dubas and Prindsomething signed Ceci thinking:
1. We get rid of Zaitsev contract.
2. If he gets injured during the season we can apply his WHOLE un-bonused salary to IR or LTIR
3. If he does well and we want to trade him at the TDL only the remainder of his salary is the real hit so he could potentially have some trade value if he gets his game back.

VS

Let's give Ceci a bonus heavy contract so we can trade him when he sucks and has no value now and we've given him $3Milly cash bonus.

Hmmm, maybe Dubas & Co. were smart about the Ceci contract.

Not sure about that....he's look great higher up the line up. Just think the role he was expected to do on his off-wing was a big ask for him and unlike when he plays with Matthews/Nylander, Nylander is more of the boards/cycle guy...without the crash n bang Hyman style.
