Carol Schram: Canucks place Baertschi, Goldobin, Biega on waivers ahead of opening night
With opening night of the NHL's 2019-20 season just two days away, the Vancouver Canucks got down to their roster limit on Monday by assigning Guillaume Brisebois to Utica and placing Sven Baertschi, Nikolay Goldobin and Alex Biega on waivers. For now, Adam Gaudette makes the team. - Carol Schram
Thanks, Carol.
Just a reminder to everyone that the HB Canucks draft is tonight at 7

Motte wasn't waiver eligible last year after preseason, he needed to spend 1 more day on an nhl roster to lose his non-waiver status |

Thanks Carol!
Funny they opted to waive players, and keep Gaudette as the 13th/14th forward... |

Thanks Carol! These decisions don't come easy, but I'm really disappointed LE made this team. Just seems win-now mode overrode any sense in terms of long-term (or even short beyond this year) planning here. LE can't be turned into a tradable asset at this point, I think JB is still holding out hope he can and after three years I've got to say I really disagree with any rationale that involves LE improving or playing better. SVen on the other hand or even goldy could concievably play well enough to be tradable, or even prove they should be on this team going forward. IMO JB messed up here, but still this has been his best offseason/camp regardless.
Oh, and I'd like to remind minivan to write this down in his book, assuming you have a new one the dog didn't eat: "Yes LE deserved to make this team" Minivan 2019 |

I think Loui gets to stay because he can be useful in the bottom six and on the PK. Baertschi can't - and doesn't become tradeable if he doesn't get any ice time as an extra forward.
I'm more surprised that they didn't cut bait with Schaller.

I can somewhat buy that LE is useful on the PK, but not at 5v5. There's a lot of games where he plays 12-14 minutes and isn't even noticeable at 5v5. And it's not like he's out there against top lines, TG preferred to play Bo in that role last year. It's actually incredible that LE can go full games getting decent minutes and go unnoticed at 5v5. |

Why didn't they get rid of JV? That guy sucks ass. Came into camp out of shape or didn't meet their targets. F that guy. |

It's definitely a fine line that management has to walk.
On one hand if you're serious about bundling a winner long-term you want to establish a precedent and a culture where guys like LE and JV's camp/pre-season attitude/play isn't tolerated and reward a kid like Gaudette, and not just reward him but continue to grow his confidence by giving him a solid role right from opening night.
On the other hand, you don't want to outright waive a young player like Virtanen and seem him flourish into a valuable speedy/physical bottom 6 winger for a rival team, perhaps even inside your own division.
Where they lose me is when they keep LE on the roster, unlike Jake, there's no concern about losing a young cost-controlled "asset". He's an easy player to make an example out of to establish a culture with a "spots earned, salaries don't matter" mantra
I really don't view LE as some sort of a PK specialist, he doesn't do anything extraordinary out there, he just stays in his zone. I've seen guys like Sutter and Beagle make nice PK plays, those guys are a true "plus" on the PK
I think Sven being waived is purely about "cap bait", JB knows Eriksson/Schaller would clear so he threw out a guy who might get claimed. This has nothing to do with on-ice play or Loui "the PK specialist" Eriksson. JB wants to clear cap after a summer of spending and getting hit with Lu's recapture. |

What you desire the most. The most potential possible. The most scoring possible. The best contracts.
Team game with different situations within every game that some players are more suitable than others.
Everybody going to make the team into what they want. GM's job is to take the best of each to fill out a roster.
Unless what Carol was saying that Van might make a waiver claim and then possibly someone else goes down after. |

I can see that. I just despise everything JV has done since he got here. I think he's the reason McCann got traded and now that guy is playing top line with Crosby and we get this plug. |

It makes sense from a win-now perspective, I agree. Also agree Schaller looked awful all pre-season I thought, not sure the idea there. |

JV's potential was enormous though. He could skate and hit hard. Good thing they kept him on the team as a 19 year old. Really sparked a budding career |

For the freakout fetishists, I'd suggest heading on over the HFCanucks to get your fix where they're just as pissed about Alex freakin Biega being waived as they are about Sven. |
