Those players have a tonne of leverage after year 3. The QO's will be 9+ but they players can file for arb for 1 yr and walk into UFAgency.

I doubt any of them want to leave but it gives them a tonne of leverage on their next deals. They'll be one yr from UFA so they'll be signing UFA $$. Judging what Tavares and Panarin and the other elite UFA's are getting years 4-6 are probably 12+ if these guys keep proving they are elite.

I know someone posted the numbers the other day but yeah, if they do perform well in their 3 years, they'll get more money than Marner on their new contract but will most likely have trouble "matching" his salary over the same 6 years.

Time will tell how it will look in a few years but I kinda like these 3 year deals for the teams right now.... especially those needing cap space to compete for the cup.

Ya, definitely some short term gain for the teams.

I didn't see what was posted (Monkeypunk?) but if Tkachuk is 3x7 now and enters yr 4 as an elite winger (eg. Panarin) then years 4-6 are going to be worth 11-13 Milly per year. So those same 6 yrs likely cost the Flames between 55-60 million.

Well he's been better than Tkachuk so there's that.

3 x 7 is pretty equivalent to 6 x 10 .....Marner got the guarantee and a bit of a premium. But the numbers are a lot closer then most understand.

My guess is the last three big signings have been Nylander, Tavares and Matthews who all got longer deals and Marner wanted a piece of that guaranteed pie.
