Blues traded up to get Bokk then trade him for a piece that doesn’t make sense right now. Paying almost 5 million for a 3rd line defensemen. Didn’t know if Eddy would play with us this season with him going to arbitration but this is an odd trade. If Petro is going to out price the Blues next season it makes sense. Just kind of wondering right now

This happens after Klim starts looking more like they thought he could. RW is stacked then so a player's value is still somewhat high, but looks like there are concerns.

Best right side in the NHL?

I'll take Burns, Karlsson, Prout.....but only because top 4 play so much - those 3 are the best 3 maybe in the entire league for sure

Karlsson is a center.

His pp rates are not very good.

He's a tweener who took a few steps back in his career. Now he'll answer if all the trade talk distracted him or his ceiling is lower than originally thought.

But his underlying numbers on the pp showed him to be Carolina's issue rather than help.

4th in PP Goals for all defensemen over the last 5 years isn't good? Why do people always try to be negative in here haha. We just won a freaking cup!

Over the last 5 years, he's 15th in the NHL among ALL SKATERS in PP shots. 10th in Missed shots.

He's tied for 47th in PP goals in that time.

The Canes kept force feeding him the puck for years, trying to make him into a trigger man on their abysmal powerplay and, with the exception of a single season, it never worked.

Sounds good to me. Over the last 3 years he is 23rd with 42 PP points.
Right up there with Pietro (19th with 47 points) and way above Parayko (47th with 27 points). It is an upgrade for us....

23rd among defensemen...

104th among all skaters, which is not great for a player who has been the primary shooting option on a powerplay.

Like, he's a good player, but he's been detrimental to our powerplay for the better part of a decade.

You shouldn't discredit the fact its among all defensemen. To be in the top 30 for dmen makes him a rare commodity like it or not. Not an elite one, and this year he is only 4.16 million cap hit and a HUGE upgrade over Edmundson. Next year when the new contract kicks in we'll have him at decent cap hit and insurance if we loose Pietro and let Parayko take his place.

See, thing to me is, that 23rd would be good if he wasn't used as the primary option on the powerplay.

That's where it becomes the issue to me. If the canes were getting shots from elsewhere it would be fine, but everything was set up to filter the puck back to him for shots, which maybe is more a systemic problem than one with the player himself, but indicates that his usage was far higher than it should have been.

So he won't be primary him and Pietro will share the load and Parayko is progressing still. He'll be on the 3rd pairing too, but now Pietro won't have to play as many minutes a night as we'll have 3 SOLID pairings. Also Faulk's PK minutes will help too. Thing is the fact he's 23rd means he'd be on the top unit for most of the 31 teams in the NHL... I mean its better than any other D-man on your team. Hamiliton was 34th in PPP and Slavin hasn't played enough, but both had less PPP than Faulk last year. So what does that say about your team's depth?

It says that Dougie Hamilton was catastrophically misused last season.

The only defenseman with more goals than Hamilton last season was Morgan Reilly, and Dougie played 90 minutes fewer on the PP than Faulk did.

Fact is the Canes were over the cap, and were not willing to spend almost $5 million for a 3rd pairing defenseman when we still have Trevor van Riemsdyk to fill that role and a better offensive weapon to take over Faulk's PP time.

They certainly weren't going to make their 5th best defenseman the highest paid d man on the team next year, either.

He takes a lot of inefficient shots, he was part of the reason why the Canes would have nights where they’d score 2 goals on 30+ shots.

it's one thing Tulsky says they've been working on. Why, when a player gets hundreds of shots, he's not getting an equivalent number of goals.

Said one thing he's learned in the last couple years is that while it's contextual, "luck" plays a lot less of a role in a player's shooting percentage than most in the public sphere would think. Some guys just aren't very good at taking effective shots even though they do a good job of getting to spots where they can take one.

I don't think he was your 5th best dman though. He was 2nd in points last year, 3rd in points per minute, 4th in TOI/G. I'd say 3rd best. He will be our 3rd best d-man too behind Pietro / Parayko. We just managed our cap in a way where he fits. I think its a win / win for both teams. Bokk is a good prospect and Eddy is a decent dman and you guys got cap space.

I agree with him. The new models developed over the past few years that take into account where the puck is shot from is a great start. Plus a one time point on goal from the point seems much more dangerous than a regular one from that distance.

Anyone still using corsi and 5v5 points/60 is a dinosaur

Yeah, he was talking about 5v5 being the go to for a lot of guys and how that's not really true either. Yeah, the majority of the game is played in that state, but the time on special teams is not insignificant.

Also said that while the public sphere is currently tracking about 300 data points per game on players, internally the Canes are tracking over 3000.

Like he said, they're now at a spot where they can pretty confidently tell who is having good results and who is likely to continue to have good results going forward. The hard part is determining WHY they're having those results. Did he hit the post because he was unlucky or did he hit the post because he just didn't shoot it good enough?

One of the talking heads on nhl tonight just brought up a possibility of Dunn being expendable with The Faulk signing and thinking Petro will resign. He didn’t think about Jbow or Gunnar being expendable at all. Normally that guy is alright. But he is wrong there.
