Yeah, I'd agree with you on that, too.
I mean. I think both were probably $1m too much.
Like when I think, "Matthews at $10.6 x 5", I think that's a pretty decent deal.
When I think "Marner at 9.9 x 6", I still think that feels a bit high - and it's probably because of the Kucherov deal. - Monkeypunk
Marner has had 1 season over a point a game and suddenly felt that he is the best RW in the league.. I'm happy he's a Leaf, but he held the team hostage for sure. |

Marner was overpaid by $3-$4 million....
2 years in the league , totally benefitted playing with Tavares , had no business getting almost $11 million this early in his career.....
Dubas got fleeced... only question is how badly...
Pastrnak $6.6 million
Kucherov $9.5 million
thats just a couple....
enough said..... - CarlitoBrigante
I think it was in the media that the Marner camps demand on a 3 year deal was 10 million per? At that point dubas probably thinks he's getting a deal getting him signed for 6 years, including 2 UFA years for an extra 900k per.
I kind of feel like dubas gets the raw deal. He'd be taking more heat if he didn't get Marner signed than he is for signing him at that number. After the Willie poop, Marner just needed a contract and to be in camp. Dubas was doing his job at that point.
Marner's a bit of a female genitalia for holding the 'only team in the league he wants to play for', his hometown team over a barrel. Especially considering he rakes millions more on endorsements here than he would anywhere else. Part of me still hopes he finishes that contract in sunrise in front of 8500 people who don't give a (frank) every night. At least you'll have that sick base salary when your endorsement income goes down the poopter. |

I think Timashov gets the early spot on the 4th line with Spezza and the Goat for now because Timashov needs to go through waiver... I think it's worth dumping all the older "fringe" guys and see what he can do until Hyman comes back
Unless Dubas knows he won't get claimed... tricky situation really. I liked this guy with the Marlies in the last 2 years |

I just think Marner and Matthews should have been signed to longer terms for the money. Tavares got $11M for 7 years. Fine to pay Matthews more but could have been 7 or 8 years plus C. Doesn't matter anymore if the brains can muddle through until the Cap goes up.
Kuch's contract is understated by lack of state income taxes on 41 games. Tampa has about $8.4M in cap space and that is with Domingue and Condon partially buried in AHL. - Leafsandbolts
Yeah, I know what you mean.. Out of the 3 of them, only the UFA player took a bit of a discount.. Since the Islanders and Sharks both offered more $$.
I wish we had guys that played at Kuch's level for Nylander level pay. |

If Brayden Point signs the 3 yr deal for $5.66M annually, how much did we overpay for Mitch Marner? - PatC80
Depends what it costs TB to re-sign Point in 3 years.

so... all joking aside - why wouldn't Ottawa or Columbus offer sheet Point right now?
they both have sufficient CAP space, and an offer to Point at this stage would be tough for Tampa to match at 8.5M plus... you'd have to think that 9M offer, which is marginally more than the Habs offered for Aho.
in particular Columbus needs offensive help...
why isn't super agent Darren Dreger talking about this? |

Marners werent.

I smell a trade. The fringe guys should be traded off for young D men that could become useful. Brought up through the farm system. Our forward core is locked in for years. Time to develope the D core in the A. |

Why would Point sign an offersheet to say yes, I'd be willing to move to Columbus or Ottawa in the winter and get taxed to (frank) not playing in thw playoffs, rather than spend all my free money in the sun after I've most likely enjoyed a good playoff run. |

Think the question should be how underpaid is point.
Both have to be worth 7-8 on a 3 year deal. 6 years including a couple UFA years should be around 9.5-10 - joel878
I think that's about right. Then Florida seems to get a 15% kiss from it's players. So maybe 20 milly over 3 yrs is the number.
Really wished some reporter would have asked MM/KD about the inclusion of his ELC bonuses in his deal. They made it sound like Dubas included the 4.8 milly in the July offer. If so then that would explain MM number pretty nicely. 6 x 10 + bonus $ + shout out to Dougie 10.9893. |

Still a little low I think.
But I think that speaks to tampas situation. As in not having gone through having a Willie sit out until Christmas last year, and watch that situation crater the whole teams season.
Marner and his agent knew the team couldn't do that again this year and they exploited it for every single penny they could. |

I can't imagine many teams are interested in our "diamond in the rough" pickups we made this year.
Haven't been impressed with Gravel, Shore, Schmaltz, Petan, Harpur, Gaudet, Read, Kossilla or even Aberg.
I think Dubas needs to update his software for whatever fancy stats he's using. |
