Our preseason teams are pretty even though.
Half NHL players, half young players/guys fighting for spots.
I don't recall the Habs ever doing something like what Babcock decided. - Scabeh
The NHL has a pre-season roster rule because once upon a time, the Habs sent a busload of dog poop to Toronto.
Early 1980s. |

Well aware. But Bobby's making the point that those dollars earned in US are spent in US (in the US) but spent in Cdn (in Canada) ...meaning players get better bang for their buck up here and shouldn't female dog n moan about high taxes.
Problem is as LeafBoltsy pointed out the cost of most things up here has already been converted and as I pointed out the cost of living in Toronto is (frank)ing nuts relative to most US cities.
Advantage to the no-state-tax states. It is what it is.
Leafs have endorsement $, health care and gun laws .... - The Law
Not sure if the players give a crap about the taxes, or cost of living. Ego drives the numbers. JMO |

Yup.
One of the big four will have to be traded next year or after - Fakepartofme
I love Johnny T...
but in retrospect is it possible his signing changed the structure and expectations of our team for the worse? I know you sign him anyway, you don't pass on a player like that, but immediately our team was vaulted into contender status without winning a single playoff round... our players want to get paid like they are Toews and Kane off a cup win...
Again, you sign Johhny regardless... |

How is that any different then the roster they will use on opening night? The team as constructed is a bus load of dog poo. |

Neither player has finished top 10 in scoring or led the team past the 1st round.
They're both great obviously, but they're now paid like generational superstars, which they're currently not and might never be. - BestRapperAlive
this is the crux of the debate .....Dubas, Shanny et al ( and a lot of people) seem to believe that they will.
They're 21/22 and these contracts are all about what they and the team believe they will do over the next 5/6 years.
Now it's up to them to do it. |

We'll see in 3 years.
Probably 9- 11per - Fakepartofme
It's actually $6.75 no bonuses no up front money, not back end loaded -
straight $6.75 x 3
What makes the Marner deal look bad right now is Point would have to sign for about $15.03 per year to be even with Marner in earnings (outside of tax savings of course) after six years. But that's a fvcked up number if you ask me.

AM is not a generational talent? He is damn close! AM is on a different level then Mitch. I love Mitch, but he is not a goal scorer. AM can do it all, and any weak areas he seems to continually improve at... - Hockey_Reverend
He has rare talent, but he hasn't accomplished anything. If you just looked at his paycheque you'd think he's Jaromir Jagr. I'm just being devil's advocate here, obviously I'm thrilled to watch these guys for at least 5 more years |

Signing JT changed the salary structure for sure.. You knew once he signed, Matthews would ask for more then JT, cause this is supposed to be Matthews team. Marner, he just bent all of us over a barrel while shouting, "I want to be here" |

You are incorrect, seeing as we are talking about Tamps, cost of living there is high.
Maybe other parts of the States but again we are talking about Tampa. - bobbyisno1
Not relative to Toronto ....I'd love to see your research on this ...nope, not really. |

He’ll have no idea they are icing an ahl team tonight. |

I have owned a place south of Tampa for over 30 years.
Tampa is not an expensive city.
Real estate is reasonable and was down right depressed in GFC.
Cost of living depends on your lifestyle but I think is a lot less than most nhl cities except for Columbus.
