Why would Connor get that much? His numbers were identical to Meier who did 4 years at 6M per, and far less than Aho who is a #1C at 8.6M. I put him at 6.25M AAV over 6 years. Konecny was 5.5M AAV. I can't see him getting into the 7's, and if that is the case, maybe a 3 year bridge is ideal.

Meier took a shorter term; Aho as well I believe, and Aho is also significantly higher, what with a signing bonus on his offer sheet? (not positive)

Connor much better scorer/player than Konecny at this point, although Travis certainly a decent player.

Connor will almost certainly get more than Laine by signing a long-term contract, at least he should. If a 3-year bridge deal, (doubt it), it would be a lower amount than 7.5, yes.

[quote=jetsnation] I'd be in Ross's camp on the numbers but with some twists.....

Connor @ 6 years for $7 MM . Each extra year of term beyond 6 yrs = $250K AAV
Laine @ 2 years for $6.5 MM. Each extra year adds $500K AAV/quote]

So some minor adjustments to my numbers. Since Laine came in $250K higher than I predicted I believe Connor @ 6 years might also be slightly higher as well for term. I'm guessing he is signed in next 48 hours.

Devils current RD: Subban, Severson, Smith (rookie but chl D of the year), Vatanen, Carrick,Tennyson ...... I feel strongly that a deal could be done, and Vats would be the best deal for both teams. He was their best D two year ago, and was playing very good down the stretch last season, plus he plays left and right, so depending on Buff and where you need him, he can play. Asking price is a lot lower than Faulk and both are offensive D who lack a bit in their own zone.

Vats, I don’t like the idea of another left shot (regardless if he can play both sides) on an expiring contract plus we already have so many smaller offensive guys who shoot left (Niku, Pionk, heinola, ) and obviously Morrisey who is our best D.

Sverson is really the best fit for jets if Buff doesn’t come back because he is a right shot, can play physical and is on a good deal. But I have no idea of cost?

Also, even if Heinola goes back to Finland this year the Jets have to assume that him and Samberg will be full time Jets D next year on the left side with Morrisey.

As UJ might say, "We have 50% of the two remaining RFA's on the Jets re-signed."
Only wish you would have made your prediction earlier.

What about Buff - what's your prediction on him?

I think Buffs personal leave is a cover for fitness issues likely exacerbated by a wonky ankle that hampered training. The leave and rumours about it are crafted to take the heat off a veteran player and provide him a little respect.

Can you imagine the twitterverse if buff had checked in to camp at 290 and with poor cardio? That would be a bad habit precedent for the Jets locker room and would make juicy and personal trash talk for opponents.

He will be back when his fitness returns- a week or two maybe?

I also agree with 2.0 here. When I first heard the news and also the fact that he didn't play in the summer I thought he was done with hockey. However, if that was the case, he would have just retired and not dragged this on. I was thinking he might not be back till at least Nov-Dec time frame. It will take time to properly get back in shape.

Sadly I just think he’s done. Even if he comes back, he won’t be fully back and I see injuries and missed time throughout the year.

It doesn’t matter at this point the reason, out of shape, nagging injuries, the concussion he suffered last year or lost desire to play. The fact we are in this position means he’s done and we are just delaying the announcement whether it’s in a day, week, month or year. He’s done.

And that’s ok, he was fun to watch and will always be welcomed back to visit and celebrated for the player he was.

Agree, think the Jets know that he's not coming back but don't want to announce it due to possible trade for a d-man.
You'd think if it was a wonky ankle they would put him on LTIR and he would still get paid and his cap hit wouldn't count.
As it stands right now, don't believe he's getting paid, and his cap hit still doesn't count. The Jets wouldn't do that to Buff would they if it was a wonky ankle and out of shape? They'd put him on LTIR and let him get his $$$. Guys go on LTIR with a rash.

The theory goes that the ankle is fine now but impacted training in March April May, things got away on buff and he didn’t get it together in time for camp. He’s a proud guy and it was a little misdirection to save face and buy time. Why is he still in Winnipeg if this is about personal time and a family decision?

Perhaps, Byfuglien likes Winnipeg and wants to settle here after he retires. It's also interesting he thinks about retirement the same season that that his full NMC expires.

I also think if the Jets want to go all in on Laine that they should trade Roslovic to Edmonton for Pulujarvi. They should also look at dealing Appelton to Dallas for Honka.

All players look like they could benefit from changes in scenery.

Definitely not a fan of trading Rosco for Pulujarvi. Something happened to Pulju between draft day and his NHL first camp. Not sure what.

Appleton for Honka? Prefer this over the first proposed deal, but would still say "no." Would rather keep Appleton and perhaps include him in bigger deal, if anything. I'm thinking we have enough d of Honka's size, and this would be a reclamation project of a player who was a healthy scratch at times in Dallas last season. Not good.

But I guess the latter is a possibility, which I am not in favor of.

I’m not opposed to either of these deals but sadly after Connor I can’t see either Puljujarvi or Honka (both RFA’s) signing for the same amount we are paying Roslovic and Appleton to get them both fitted under our cap.

The other thing about this is who’s spot does he take, it should be Pionks butcwe all know it won’t be. Poolman and Niku need to play
