taxes are a way bigger draw for players than weather. Florida has no state tax and i believe California has the highest. - DoubleDown
Panthers have been terrible for years. Most of the players don't want to go there. It may change with Bob and a winning culture...we will see.
Tampa is another story. |

That Point contract..... how does Tampa always manage to get sweet deals? - Scabeh
The thing whit those RFA 3 years-deals is to check the salary of the last year. Because if he get a big pay bump at the 3rd year, he can go arbitration on the 4th year after that and get at the minimum the same salary as the 3rd year.
Exemple : if he get 4 mill year 1 - 7 mill year 2 -9 mill year 3, that give a somewhat low AAV, but guarantee is 4th year salary will be AT LEAST 9 mill if he goes arbitration.
A lot of RFA were pushing for that kind of contract this year year. So even if the AAV is good for the 3 year contract, team can get bitten hard the year after. |

In his case, it looks like it's even salary across the bat.
6.75M per year. |

So cops just passed by the office to ask for our security cameras footage from this weekend for an attempted murder case that happened just a few blocks from here. |

I think he still has a year of RFA left. In which he can't get lower than his last year salary, even going into arbitration. |

pretty fair deal for a rfa. like others before him. Aho got a better deal because of the offersheet.
I obviously let Marner and Matthews aside since Leafs are totally in left field, paying rfas like ufas. |

Maybe, but having a shot at the cup is also important. Tavares coming to Toronto was not about taxes and you may talk about his leafs pyjamas all day long, he is not signing there if they are not a contender. |

except they're not. and things won't get better in the next few years.
they should lose Barrie and/or Muzzin next July.
and their goalie the next summer.
and Reilly the year after that. |

Speculations and bias. The point is that he signed there while the team was an upcoming team and while he was thinking they would be contender for a few years. Too bad he didn't call you before signing I guess. |

It's usually not about arbitration as much as qualifying offer, i.e in that case Tampa would need to offer him at least 9 millions to retain his rights, which they won't do if, say, he averages 50 points for the next 3 seasons.
Arbitration guarantees 85% of the previous year's salary. |

Most people know he's not that good by now. So it's hard to be overrated then. |

Thanks, you are right I did confuse qualifying offer and arbitration.
Still 85% of 9 million is a nice mimimum salary. |

Still feasible. We expect him to be a 50 points player this year and he'll disappoint once again. |

To be sure, but the main point is the last year high salary is usually to have a minimum qualifying offer too high to be taken and become UFA as early as possible. |
