You are 100 percent right, IF there wasnt a Cap. In todays age of the Cap you cant have a third liner making 12m per. If Kakko, Kravstov, Igor, Chytil, Fox do become those high end players how will we fit them under the Cap?? The players are starting to get paid earlier in their careers now. If they become high end players, will they average 6-10 mil per each?? With Panarin and Trouba already taking up 19 percent of the Cap now, it will be hard. Look at the situation the Leafs are in now. Good home grown talent that earned to get paid. Did they really need JT?? But If they dont become high end players then it really doesnt matter because we wont be winning anything then anyway. - Brukie
So, don't try to improve your team today because it will be hard to sign players years from now? IF, those players improve enough to be high-salary guys (which they might not be without talent around them to begin with)?
Doesn't make sense to me. |

How about the Blackhawks? Worked for them, and then they got him to say he is allergic to his equipment |

So, if we aren't winning within 365 days, signing a UFA is a poor decision, is that what you are saying? It's a waste of money. Got it.
BTW,
2005 Anaheim sign Teemu Selanne & Scott Niedermayer; win Cup in 2007.
1997 Dallas sign Ed Belfour (and Nieuwendyk in 1995); win Cup in 1999.
2008 Chicago sign Brian Campbell; win Cup 2011
2005 Pitt sign Sergei Gonchar; win Cup 2009
that's after about 1.5 minutes of looking. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find more examples of having success after signing a big free agent. |

Chara was a pretty good signing though
and the Bruins weren't close to contenders when they did it
you'd probably agree with that right? - jimbo83
Yes he was but he was definitely one of the top 3 defense man in the league at the time. Panarin isnt in the top 5 of the league.

see, I think ultimately the situation here is that you just dont think Panarin is that good, why don't you just stick with that |

Ok agreed, I just dont think Panarin is that good to command that 11.6 mil contract!!

I'd say the Leafs and us did the same thing because you can't choose when guys like that become free agents. I think if all those guys became super high end players, we would be leading into cap trouble whether or not we had signed Panarin and acquired Trouba. There is a certain logic to the idea that you would try to win why your young guys are making less. Although Panarin has a NMC, don't forget that Trouba and Skjei does not and you could always trade them at some point if you needed the cap room.
I don't want to compare us to the Pens because they have one of the top 10 players in league history and a borderline HOF center backing him up, but one thing the Pens have done effectively for 15 years is just fielding the best team possible and trimming players for cap room as needed.

so you rather have had the Islanders get him (because they were the 2nd highest bidder) and have to face Panarin and Barzal the next 7 years

Exactly, those teams started surrounding their guys right out of the chute with veterans to help the cause. Those vets weren't as good when they won as when they were signed, but were still valuable contributors and were worth their weight in gold in stabilizing the young players and taking some of the pressure off for them to develop. |

are you saying that young players, especially European players, may benefit by playing with a skilled guy like Panarin? |

Oh yes I would have!! Imagine Panarin and Barzal and 24 million in Cap space gone!!
I really think you are over valuing a 30 goal scorer. |

He's the best playmaker on the team and it isn't really close. He may "only" score 30 goals, but getting 40-50 assists to go along with that makes him almost like a second center out on the ice.
If Buch doesn't score over 30 this year playing with someone as skilled a passer as Panarin, he might never score that much. |
