The way hischier and gusev played last night I am not shocked that they are testing that out

Hall Hughes palmieri
Gusev hischier
Boqvist zajac bratt
Wood zacha Coleman

If Nico become our 2nd C... He will be exposed to much less talent he could seriously break 100pt playing with Gus

This guy isn't the sensitive one, btw.

I'm just tired of bloggers who no longer know how to write hiding behind these stats and charts to make themselves look like they are intelligent

I didn't think he had trouble winning, I thought he had trouble staying healthy and he looked really healthy last night
- jimbro83

I agree with that.

Who where you most disappointed in on the rangers or did it go perfectly other then not coming away with the W I know it was only the Rangers first pre season game.

I think it's absolutely stupid as hell to even MENTION Corsi stats of a pre-season game. Absolutely 100%
- jimbro83

I don't get this dismissal of preseason games. The players care. It may be 95% instead of 100% but to suggest that the play isn't representative or that you can't get information past the eye test is pretty silly.

I still think Hughes looked a lot better with Gusev then Nico. Maybe the stats say elsewise but I wouldnt split Jack and Nikota for Nico and Nikita when Hall and Nico already have such chemistry. Obsiously we havent gotten to see what Hall and Jack look like but going off what we know...

the only thing that bothered me were some of the defensive breakdowns

I thought Trouba looked excellent offensively but him and Skjei could be a defensive adventure all year

Skeji is the biggest disappointment thus far

because it's not the full squads of either team, it literally doesn't matter

advanced stats are all about the circumstances the coaches put a player in anyway

I remember a few years back Skjei was the next big thing. What happened?

What I find frustrating is that over the past 3 years Hynes still hasn't found a way for the team to transition the puck from defense to offense effectively. Defensively we are poor getting out of our zone, and we shouldn't have to rely on an individual player to do this, it should be a team thing, it's as if Hynes doesn't work on this in practice or doesn't care.

Still, a good result, offense looks great

I think coaching, Lindy Ruff taking over the Rangers defense has caused his game to go south

obviously they don't matter for standings but it's important to see how your players have progressed from last season and see what form they come back in.

he's just an old man yelling at clouds so I guess we should just let him be.

I disagree. I think the whole point of advanced stats is to isolate the player from his surroundings. Obviously shot attempts are about the circumstances, but stats like shot contributions are pretty isolated.

It's never about stats telling the whole story, but it does frame the conversation. Todd could've just as easily written "Nico good. Gusev good." but by adding some stats he gives some context.

see, this is an example of what I am talking about

because people used to actually write really good blogs before the advanced stat craze started and now people don't actually know how to write anymore

thank you for illustrating the point

Have to say rangers are the best for it to be a good blog, so don't worry we all know Todd is great at this

it matters relative to preseason, which matters in terms of where these kids are at. So yea, corsi and advanced stats DO mean something, relative to that, which right now is really the point of preseason.

just preseason. preseason is for trying these things. Hughes will take time to improve faceoffs. So much time and energy can be spent trying to get the puck from the other team, where it would be so much easier to just start with the puck after a FOW. Growing pains.

Allow to correct/add to this...

The year we made the playoffs, we had an amazing preseason. The chemistry was instant. And that carried through to the beginning of season and into playoffs.

So preseason could be a very important thing if the whole team catches the wave at the same time.

It may just be that Gusev will have chemistry with everyone. He's looked good everywhere so far.
- willschulme

I did just see that the devils may play hall tomorrow and if that is the case his line may be hall Hughes palmieri

We do have depth where players can be moved around

Hall Hughes palms
Gusev hischier bratt/Simmonds
Boqvist zajac bratt/Simmonds
Wood zacha Coleman

Where there can be movement and all depends on chemistry, we know hischier and hall do but who knows with Hughes and if hischier has that chemistry with gusev or Hughes has better chemistry with gusev

So far preseason gusev has looked good no matter who he has been with and hischier can handle any line, but the preseason even though it's early it's promising
