Now, I may not be an expert at the rules around contracts and such, but I got one question. Why not make Chabots contract heavier in the front while they have literally nobody to pay, and then lighter on the back end when White, Brown, Tkachuk, etc. need to be paid? Plus lets say Chabot goes and chokes and suddenly becomes bad, at least the high years on his contract would be gone and it would be lower to trade him in the end...

I was wondering the same thing. I understand the nhlpa bargain year. My logical guess is they want to pay him the big$ when he is projected out to be at his peak.
But they signed him to 8 years so the Sens are comfortable with the player . So once again why not front the big$ while the payroll is low? It is a bit odd.... still love it regardless.

My conspiracy theory .That spatso will love .Melynk is being cheap while concluding his imminent sale of the team.

Nice job Pierre Dorion. He made a solid job since trade deadline and acquired solid young talent(Duclair,Abramov).Once that Ryan contract get off the books in 3 years, there should be more than enough money(there already is)to resign Tkachuk long term too.White got resigned longterm,Chabot got resigned longterm and Tkachuk will likely follow the same path.Brannstrom will likely become very good,Logan Brown had taken big step forward and could potentially be at least 2C very soon.

There is very solid talent in the pipeline and while we all know that not all of them may pan out as advertized...this team could very well achieve to be playoffs team in few years.I would really like them to finish in the bottom of standings this season to get a top 5 pick but it is rumored to be great draft and even in top 10 we would get elite talent.

Where are the bums who kept trolling Dorion day in day out? Give credit to the guy when its due

So how many first round picks do the Sens have this year? Is it two or three?

plus whatever they end up acquiring at the trade deadline.

i expect atleast one guy to be traded for maybe a late 1st.

pageau, tierney, demelo (don't want to trade him, but you never know), etc

this is supposedly the deepest draft in the last 15 to 20 years, so now is the time to sell.

my dream scenario is to come out of this draft with Lafreniere and Barron

Chabot is a class act. He knew it was a rebuild and wasn't greedy - when he easily could've been.
Chabot turns 23 in Jan. He will be signed until he is 31.5 years old. It's really good for the Sens

Agreed - this contract and the White extension have restored an enormous amount of credibility to the team's management. These signings also show a bit of the character that you often hear mentioned when the team is discussing their draft picks and prospects. For a team like the Senators, there's really no purpose to trying to bring in players with no interest in playing for a smaller market, or who are going to be difficult to sign. Chabot and White have both committed in a big way to the team's new direction, and hopefully it starts to bring some much-needed optimism back to the fanbase.

I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong.

I didn’t think they would reach an agreement on a deal this early..especially with the rfa class next year.

It’s one of those deals that’s a lot now, but could be great from years 3-8.

Agree 100%, even on the 1st point. Didn't think EM would be telling Dorion to actually pay good coin.

Agree 100% again - timing of this deal was great too.

Morning brothas...

This year will be an absolute win if:

Quinton Byfield OR Alexis Lafrenière are drafted next spring

we also need to get barron with our second 1st round pick

a top 4 of:

Chabot-Thomson
bransstrom-barron

would be INCREDIBLE for years to come

barron is better than Bernard-docker. I've been watching him for 3 years in Halifax, kid was playing top 4 minutes in Halifax as a 16 year old

it's irrelevant, we won't get him unless SJ has a terrible year. he's ranked 8th or 9th overall in most prospect rankings.

it was just a dream

Nice to see the positive commentary.

Having Chabot and White sign long term deals is very much a positive. I’m not sold on White just yet, but great to see the commitment to the franchise.

This year’s draft is huge. While I think it’s a bit premature now to call this years draft one of the deepest in recent memory, part of me hopes that Dorion can trade some 2021 picks for 2020 picks. I don’t think it is impossible for Dorion to end up with 2 top 10 picks with some smart moves.

Right now, I think Byfield is criminally underrated by scouts. Ranked much lower than I thought. Could be a steal if a team lands him late top 10. Sort of reminds me of Sean Couturier’s draft ranking drop.

Byfield is projected to go 2nd-3rd overall. Lucas Raymond to me looks like the 2nd best player in the draft thus far. He’s got a bit of explosiveness to his game and serious skill with the puck...very much like marner imo.

I would like to get Lazar back. I think he could become a good role player, worth a shot:

To Calgary: Mikkel Boedker
To Ottawa: Curtis Lazar

With all the second round picks Ottawa has, plus the potential after perhaps trading Tierny, or others, I wouldn't be surprised if they trade up, on some level.

Is byfield underrated? I thought he was ranked 2nd/1st overall.

Also, sidenote, Abromov has a concussion. Real shame after his strong start(preseason wise)

I always thought Lazar would pull it together and become more of what we thought he was when he was first drafted. But now we know. He is not more than what he appears to be. He has been given every opportunity to prove himself and he never quite makes the grade.

Now it is about ice time. Too many good kids fighting for jobs. Better to let Batherson, Balcer, Formenton, Brown or Norris get the ice time early in the season. I am especially high on Formenton because he plays such a good defensive game.

I expect Boedker to be put on the waiver wire, likely not taken by anyone else.

All non-Sens fans: I guarantee Chabot will not be a Sen next year. Melnyk will never pony up what he's worth.

One week later...

All non-Sens fans: Chabot isn't worth 8x8.

Dude can you read?

This deal is being praised by nearly everyone. Get over your inferiority complex and relax
