lol read that whole thread. I think I use advanced stats somewhat more than some of you guys, but bloggers like him and Tanner just don't understand that they are a complementary tool. Advanced stats work more in baseball because it's largely an individual game. Too many things happen in hockey for it to be 100% relative. - 2sticks1puck
I do have a bit of a bone to pick with baseball too.
In my life I have never seen a player have a better season, eye test wise, than Don Mattingly in 1986. He was incredible. Yet, he only gets a 7.2 WAR for that season. Its insane to me
I know that advanced stats in baseball don't penalize a player for strikeouts but there has to be something said for a guy who never ever struck out, always put the ball in play and played incredible defense at first base.
I don't really like how WAR is calculated |

Tony D better take notice if he wants to be a Ranger where he has played his best hockey to date last half of last season Fox can play too!!! The jets lost their entire Right side of Defense Buff most likely done, we got Trouba and Meyers is gone! We could get a first round pick out of the Jets for Tony in the next draft which will be a very talented draft! Jeff I hope your calling the Jets daily!!!! - patersonnick46

Did Lias (goal aside) stand out to anyone else last night? I felt like i noticed him every shift he was on the ice |

Thought that he had a strong game everywhere except the face-off dot. He kept losing draws... |

Why would Jets trade us a first round pick in a GREAT draft when they can just sign him to an Offer Sheet?
Further, if we trade Tony and either Fox or Trouba get hurt, then we are shorthanded ourselves. Need D'Angelo to come in and PROVE he is worth big $$ contract for next season and beyond, even if his future is not in NY. |

I dunno, that Owar # would only be behind Trout (who is a legit better player all time than Mattingly and is a slam dunk hall of famer) and Yelich who was having a ridiculous year before he got hurt. Donnie was 2nd in that category in 86 behind Wade Boggs by a measly tenth of a WAR. I sort of agree with you by not penalizes strikeouts sort of trivilizes the potential for productive outs for sac flys and such, but I'd say that the stats mostly got Mattingly's stats right. |

Finally...someone that gets it...nobody needs to trade for ADA right now; just offer sheet him and it's a done deal without losing assets of any sort. Sure the Rangers could match, but with what $$$?
I do not believe Smith will go to Hartford unless he totally stinks it up in the next few preseason games. Sending him down, though, only saves $825k in cap anyways. |

Not quite true but point was taken that no team would need to give up a 1st to get ADA |

I don't think they got hosed in the Hayes deal, that's about the going rate for a player like Hayes and I think they kinda had their balls in a vice as far as Trouba goes. If the guy tells everyone there's only a handful of teams that he'd sign with and he's got a history of dragging out negotiations forever then they probably aren't going to get fair-market value for him.
But giving up a first rounder for DeAngelo is a fireable offense in my book. Especially when, as pointed out before this, you could probably just offer sheet him for just under $1.4M AAV and give up literally nothing |

yeah, I want a first rounder for Tony D, that doesn't mean I think a team is dumb enough to do it |

You'd have to think though, that for a team to sign ADA to a contract that we wouldn't match in about 10 seconds, it would have to be something like 2.5 million plus. That still isn't a 1st rounder, but it's not nothing. At that point, they might as well just do a straight out trade as not to poke the bear. |
