So they expect a lesser skilled player to fill that role. Seems like a recipe for disaster. - Mr_Underwood

To answer your questions in last blog, no, I will not be buying the new COD. I think the last time I bought a COD was the original Modern Warfare. |

What was awful was the defense not being able to get the puck to the forwards in transition and the defense making awful pinches in the offensive zone forcing the Penguins to give up the most odd man rushes in the NHL (per Yohe). Injuries played a small part, but poor acquisitions played a bigger part.
Edit: pinches. Not punches. - j.boyd919
Now this is reasonable because you called out the Pen's defense in general. The entire D corps had a subpar season (as a corps). Individual stats and metrics don't mean ship if you suck pretty much all season, and then get broomed out of the playoffs. |

The best part is, when the Pens are winning it’s always “the Pens are able to roll 4 lines, we even had Dupuis on the 4th line! Every line was a threat to score!”
But when they’re not “Geno and Letang need to be better. More like Sid. Regardless of still being elite producers in the game of hockey We nEeD MoOOorE.”
It’s (frank)ing retarded. - j.boyd919

Except Sid and Phil had one of their best seasons ever, Letang was on pace for one of his best and Geno was over ppg.
I do agree there are more issues than JJ but I think the biggest issue in the playoffs was how long 5 or 6 key guys missed and basically came back right at start of playoffs. They werent up to game speed and they werent in sync. Also, a few others, ie McCann, were playing extremely banged up and probably wouldnt of dressed if it was regular season. - MattStrat
I'll give you the part about the key guys not having enough time to ramp up for the playoffs. But I can't forget the stretch in March while those same guys were out injured, and the team played their most solid basic hockey all season. They basically sucked all season BEFORE that stretch, and they, well... we know what happened in the 'offs. |

Meh... It's just an experiment. Hags didn't score much either. I can't say I've watched a ton of Tanev, but Hags scored 10, 6, 10 and 1 (16 games) in Pittsburgh. Sullivan changes things up so quickly, it's more than likely that line will be broken up in the 3rd period of the 1st game. |

You know you could be accused of such an act don't you? That's what happened to him. At least that's what he explained in his Podcast. I believe he said he never touched his ex-wife, it was more like a discussion and he smashed something in the wall. I'll check the facts and get back to you. |

Oh yeah, this sort of thing happens, and probably way more than anyone knows. I have a brother whom I'm very close to, and I know in my heart he didn't touch his ex, without a doubt. It took him YEARS to clear his name anyways, and he said it's basically about who makes the first move, whether it's true or not. |

So, with this said, how HAS the guy managed to craft an NHL career of 13 seasons?? Seems just a bit harsh... or inaccurate...? - Cousinskrid
1) His first contract was 7 years. That's a long contract and not easy to buy out of.
2) His next two contracts were pretty cheap.
3) As jboyd mentioned, his draft status.
4) Never underestimate ANY GM to make a bad signing. |

I place zero stock on a 4 game sample size.
Oh and when I say defense, I exclude Letang and Dumo considering they were a +24 at 5v5.
The problem was definitely the Pens trying to force JJ into a role he’s not fit for. They tried him all over the lineup and he sucked everywhere.
Another problem was trading Oleksiak. Him and Maatta were a +8 at 5v5.
Another problem was Schultz injury.
Another problem was Rikolla sucking.
The problem wasn’t really on the Pens D Corp.
The problem was roster management, which is shocking that people don’t recognize that. |

As far as I can tell, they're looking at using Tanev in the Hag's role. Getting to pucks, creating turnovers and getting them to Malkin and Galch. - madmike71
But wasn't Hags best output with the Pens on the HBK line which was the third line? Based on Hag's lack of scoring ability, I don't remember him playing much in the top 6. Tanev has a similar lack of hands but is not as skilled as Hags (although he is more physical). So yes, a glorified 4th liner. |

Question for the fancy stat experts...
I don't much about WAR stats and I'm not sure if I'm just mis-remembering, but isn't it kind of a dubious stat or is it considered a fairly legit stat? |

Depends on who you talk to. I think there are a few different versions of WAR made by different people. Each version probably puts different weights into different categories.
I don’t really think there is an end all/be all stat and I prefer to look at numbers (both standard and “advanced”) across the board and see where they all lineup together as opposed to trying to pin one stat on hockey. |

Simon is just replacing Crosby in the 1st line I guess. Hopefully he'll end up with Bjugstad and Hörnqvist or Malkin and Galchenyuk when it's all said and done. |

I wouldn’t look too deeply into it. They know what they have in Simon at the wing. This may be almost to see who slots where if Simon and Blueger are both on the same line. |

Well, I think Jesse’s ideal linemates were who I would have picked without ever looking at the stats to be honest lol just knowing the types of players Simon and Hornqvist are, could lead to Geno scoring 40 again. I don’t think Galch is a good match for Geno and I think McCann is overrated in these parts, although I would prefer him over Bjugstad and Tanev |

Yeah. Galch is going to get a long leash, but we have to just hope for the best. Simon anywhere other than the top 9 is a waste.
I like for defense and cycling, but he’s piss poor on transition which IMO can make life harder on Geno, but balance him with Simon and I think it’s good. |

I don’t think Galch is a bad player by any means, Galch and Simon could work. I wouldn’t mind seeing that. |
