Spezza had 8 goals and 19 assists last year, and that's with 2:12/game power play time.
That's not that great.
Looking at 5v5, Spezza had 15 points (76 games played) with 11:02/game.
Gauthier had 14 points (70 games played) with 8:09/game.
Quit thinking of 2008 Spezza. We aren't getting him. - Atomic Wedgie
Don’t put words in my mouth, I never said that once.
I did say, the Goat is a black hole for driving any sort of play. And it shows the last few years.
Spezza is an improvement, pretty easily. |

Is everyone excited for Spezza to kill penalties? Babcock is trying to transform a 55 year old offensive centre into a defence first shutdown guy. Yay! |

Kinda makes you wonder if Dubas brought Spezza in, and Babsy wasn't on board. - Atomic Wedgie
That was my first thought too.
Maybe they agreed to give Spezza the extra year to push the Goat, and give him a chance to pay for his hometown team. Win/win for the team in a not so expensive way.
Who knows...never played pro sports so don't really know what goes on behind closed doors. Wish I did. |

When in doubt, dump it high and hard off the glass.
As long as he doesn't get burnt pinching and giving up 2 on 1's....he'll be fine with this group.....at least for the reg season. |

Won't happen. Babs is all about possession. This would be pretty hard for Ceci anyway based on his previous play. The amount of work needed to get this team ready to defend is enormous. |

We can only hope that the sports science department evaluated his former diet of smoke brisket and baked beans and made him make a switch to something reasonably healthy, which will in turn improve his game |

(frank)ing finally said it.
That being said, it's entirely possible Spezza is the 4C and Gauthier becomes the 4RW. |

That "a" way to look at it.
Another way is that he has a 'serviceable' young guy in Gauthier that he doesn't hate and is giving a slew of others like Spezza and Shore a chance to steal the spot.
On the give a poop scale it's really really low priority. |

They traded away almost all their penalty killers and better defensive players. It's a team wide issue. |

This is why it's so important the Leafs need Nylander to have a good season and to move him.
Imagine if it looked like this instead...
Rielly / 10 million
Dermott / 7 million
Sandin / Liljegren
That's a significant difference in quality. |

I used to do the Polar Bear Dip in Oakville every New Year's Day. In, out, dry off, head to a guy's house who had a hot tub and a pot of chili. I'm the toughest of tough guys, but it was nasty.
I took my dog to Cherry Beach on New Year's Day this year. She was happy for about 30 minutes (she's a Lab, so she can't resist the water). At a certain point she just gave me a look and started walking back to the car. By the time we got there, she had icicles on her fur. - Atomic Wedgie
You know it's cold when the dog's had enough. Fun trying to get dressed on a beach when your hands don't work anymore. |

Wasn't their PK and D kind of bad last year? Maybe there's other guys that can have a go at it, it's not like the Leafs lost Guy Carbonneau and Scott Stevens in the offseason. |
