Is Jason Spezza a really good role model in that he is a guy who was a star and is accepting his new role gracefully as he gets older?
Babcock: Well, I think the big thing is with Spez here — we’ve talked tons about it in advance — is that there is a role here for him. But he’s got to be able to do it. We’re going to see over exhibition whether he likes it and whether he wants to do it. We’re just in the process of feeling him out and he’s feeling us out right now. It is probably a different camp that way for him, but he loves hockey.

so someone had to go mention Petan ...
I had happily forgotten about that trade....
not sure why the Leafs needed another little guy with speed and upside...
can't see him making the Leafs roster anyway... not with the need being primarily 4th line roles and guys that can penalty kill.

I'm hoping that Marner's contract has a huge impact on Point's negotiations.
That would make overpaying Marner a little more palatable. - Atomic Wedgie
Point received an offer sheet which was likely $8M to $10M for 7 years and turned it down. I expect Point's agent knows exactly how much Tampa can pay and there is still a gap between Brisebois's offer and Point's asking price. Hard to accept $4M - $2M less even if your team has a good shot at SCF and no state taxes.

Petan; 1 goal in 5 games
Lindholm; 1 goal in 61 games..
Isn't it obvious?
I'm going with Almost-SubPar Lindholm |

I went swimming in Lake Ontario on January 1st this year. I've done that cryotherapy thing where you stand in a tube filled with nitrogen gas at - 135 C, and the lake dip felt colder. - Zezel
I’ve been tempted to do that polar bear swim but my wife forbids it. She even recruited other family members to help talk me out of it. Apparently every year some old guy takes a heart attack from the sudden shock. |

Maybe? Spezza needs to show that he has rounded into season form by game 8 of the preseason, I guess . . .
I totally get the comments saying that Gauthier could get better, but Spezza is declining, so if they are already on an even plane, then Gauthier wins.
Today, I'm not going to be swayed because Gauthier played one game against Ottawa's AHL & Junior team and looked good. Good for him. I really do hope he keeps it up. But even if the guy who played yesterday shows up to all 8 preseason games, he's also played 100 NHL games where he hasn't looked very good.
Gauthier was 34% in the faceoff circle in the playoffs last year. Spezza took 3 times as many faceoffs and was still at 53%.
I feel that with Gauthier, we have guys on the Marlies who might just be able to step up and fill that role next year. . . Would Brooks be better or worse?
Anyway, I think that for Gauthier to beat out Spezza, he's going to have to beat the poop out of him - not just edge him because Gauthier doesn't really offer any role-based skills (PK, PP, faceoff). - Monkeypunk

Are we seriously debating who’s better between the Goat and Spezza?
Come on, the goat hasn’t been able to generate anything past his own blue line for the last 2 seasons. He barely can in the A.

Spezza had 8 goals and 19 assists last year, and that's with 2:12/game power play time.
That's not that great.
Looking at 5v5, Spezza had 15 points (76 games played) with 11:02/game.
Gauthier had 14 points (70 games played) with 8:09/game.
Quit thinking of 2008 Spezza. We aren't getting him.

Kinda makes you wonder if Dubas brought Spezza in, and Babsy wasn't on board. |

Because you are forcing me to make observations about last night's game, here goes:
- Marner looked lazy
- Muzzin looked slow
The first one doesn't concern me at all.
The second one scares me a teeny bit. - Atomic Wedgie
He is slow, so good observation.
*was slow last year, I was a little shocked after the analytics department claimed him to be 1 of the best D in the league. |
