Only if he scores 100 points every year. He certainly has the potential to do so, but he has alot to prove

In what world is 28 right smack in the middle of a player's prime? 23-29 are probably close to what can be considered prime years. 28 puts you at the end of your prime. Once you hit 30, you're definitely on the back-nine of your career, save maybe the rare exception.. I can't think of many players who have had career years over 30.
- Snowman X

Maybe that was a bit ambitious of a statement, but 28 is hardly "old". He's missed 8 games in his entire career and he's certainly not slowing down anytime soon. He's got more-than-reasonable contract that expires when he's 31. I would assume that WPG is still in "go for it" mode and I would say that Leddy is one of the better defenseman that might be both available and affordable.

He is the most one dimensional player in the NHL by several miles.

The only guy similar is Jeff Skinner.

- BINGO!

Guy just turned 21, I love how so many know exactly the type of player he will be over his entire career.

easy there bingo!. this isn't a $15/hr overpay to komisalley for flipping burgers.

it's $1M to $1.5M overpay or 10%ish. and years 4-6 could very well workout as under.

considering his recent struggles, Laine should get something closer to what Aho got. Point and Rantanen should be gunning for Marner's deal.

You are correct

Marner is a very good player but only got that crazy contract because the Leafs paid Tavares and Matthews big $ so he wanted the same. Also the Toronto media and their fans always over hype and overvalue their players and when it comes time to pay them their players believe that they are worth way more than they are. If Laine and Rantanen want that kind of money they will be waiting a long time.

You can usually get a good idea of what a player will be throughout their career at that age, for forwards anyways.

So Mathews will always be an extremely talented player who will never exceed 75 points and expectations because of injuries? That’s what your saying?

To play devil's advocate, Ovechkin was pretty one dimensional his first hand-full of years in the NHL. I remember the first time I saw him play in person, he literally just stood around the offensive blue line waiting for his teammates to pass him the puck. It was quite disgusting to see, and it immediately answered the Ovi vs Crosby debate for me.

I'm not saying Ovi is now a Selke Trophy candidate, but obviously his over all game has improved dramatically. Time will tell what Laine is really worth. And that is probably why a bridge deal is a good idea for both sides.

No he wasn't.

That was his reputation, but OV was always a guy who could hammer you right through the boards if he wanted to.

I'm not talking about reputation, but what I saw with my own eyes.

My brother-in-law was in love with Ovechkin; we used to go to Caps games all the time.

He had 37 goals, 73 points in 68 games last season with the 38th most TOI among NHL centres.

The "Never Hit 75" garbage is misleading. He's the best 5 on 5 scorer by far sincdee entering the NHL.

I'd really love to hear some live negoitions between GM and agent that have happened with Rantanen Tkachuk and Point after Marner's deal was announced.

It's got to be hilarious, especially Tampa.
