Sid's blocked alot of shots in his career, I think he is pretty good at it cant think of one injury he's sustained blocking a shot.... well unless you count that Orpik one he blocked with his jaw

It’s a different story on the the P.K.

Do we have any good FO guys besides Sid? Honestly don't know. I've considered starting the PK with Sid just for FOs.

One thing Kahun wasn't good at was the PP, he spent a lot of time on the second unit and did nothing, so I don't mind trying him at PK. Speed up front usually helps. I think I start Blueger-Rust and Tanev-McCann as my pairings with McCann taking FOs. Just put Rust and Blueger together because they're on the same line.

TEDDY BLUEGER

Edit: I find it funny that Blueger’s name changed in North America. His name is Teodors Blugers

It's a tragedy that the coach couldn't deal with Ian Cole. The team damn sure misses him.

I’m not sure we’d have signed him to the $4M deal he got. I believe he was $3M worth.

While that might be a great estimate, I would hazard that GMJR doesn't really do math very well....I mean given the context of all the other contracts that have been discussed here ad nauseam. (Jake's is decent)

Well think of it this way... the Pens spent $3.25M on JJ and $4M on Gudbranson regardless, so you wouldn't rather spend $4M on Ian Cole over either of those guys?

Faceoffs can definitely be critical at times, but you guys are placing wayyyyy too much importance on them.

Interesting.

A major "problem" with Cole were all his penalties, and last year he collected 115mins with COL. Just hope that Malkin improves in that category as well...

Lol off course. I was just point to the fact the Penguins weren’t planning on re-signing Cole for the amount he got.

As for the face off thing I agree but it’s definitely better to have the puck than chase it right away. Blueger and Crosby are good at it.

How the nhl became a bunch of puss ies when they instituted a visor rule?
How Phil Kessel destroyed Malkins joy of playing hockey last year?
How a blocked shot is as good as a goal scored?
How Fancy stat darling teams get beat in the post season regularly by a well coached team all buying into the system?
How a Bradon Tanev is “the fastest player in the NHL?
How Jsck Johnson sucks at hoc.........oh wait.

this is a really dumb comment. however, I don't blame you. stat absolutist ala tanner and Wilson kind of kill it for people who can't grasp it, and it feeds into this dichotomy of analytics vs. eye test. oh well.

I would agree with this. Unfortunately, it appears that the players do not. If I recall, Malkin is wanting like 20 mins a night.
- Brayn

Yeah, I saw that, don't think that will go well. Malkin might still be in a little denial about his age (man it's weird he's the oldest guy on the team!) I'd side with Sully on this one.

I think at the time they thought they ha to choose between Cole or Maatta. Maatta seemed to have more upside, but I'm not sure that worked out.

Instead to save money we got Hunwick, then JJ for the bottom pairing PK defenseman, and that REALLY didn't work out.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. He was horrible in the NHL, 44.6% though a small sample. Maybe there's hope there though.

In general I agree with you, but I do feel the ones to start the PK fall in the category of important ones. Win it, and you should get a quick clear. Lose it, and the PP has established controlled possession

I don't buy that Sullivan didn't get along with Cole. Cole seemed like he did everything he was asked from Sullivan from a playing standpoint. Blocked shots like crazy, threw the body around, competent enough with the puck to get it out of the d-zone. I think that was all GMJR, and pretty much just a salary-cap thing.

The idea that Sully had a problem with Cole comes from the fact Cole was being healthy scratched a lot that last season.

Yeah, like on the PK, especially in own zone...the reason we're discussing them in relation to PK. The Pens are one of the most penalized teams in the league and dont have a draw ace besides Sid, is why we are concerned about it and discussing faceoffs in relation to PK's.

Yea I know that, but he was so clearly on the trade block, i thought it was because they were close to a deal.
