Changing the subject - the new rules should be fun.

As many coaches challenges as you like? Doesn't take timeouts? If you get one wrong it's a 2 min delay of game penalty, and the 2nd wrong is a 4 min penalty? And not-called penalties such as a high stick right before the goal can be challenged, negating the goal? This could get interesting - our video guy is about to pull his weight...

Goalies knocking nets off will give the other team a goal....

Rubstov / Vorobyev / NAK - guys have played pro hockey for a couple years now, if they can't beat out Stewart that's pathetic
- ClaudeFather

You mean Rubstov's 14 games of AHL hockey before his season-ending injury? That's his "pro hockey for a couple years now," that you're referring to? Or are you including his MHL games as a 17-year-old?

I can't wait for the first coach to troll this by challenging calls 20 times in a row when his team is getting blown out in the 3rd.

Exactly. Why is he even being given a try out? Because he is a stand up guy and did things right by Fletcher at one point or another?

What a bad way to do business. I want the best team on the ice. Period. Forget about all that other crap.

- StepfordSam

Why? If he makes the team it is because he deserved it. If not , he goes away.

And it is very good business because other players around the league see they gave a guy a fair shake, treated him well and let him succeed or fail on his own merits.

I saw the challenge rule, but I didn’t know about the goalie knocking the net off rule. Also, pretty sure if your helmet comes off you have to go to the bench unless you’re involved in the play.

He was. a couple giveaways at the blue line, but boy can he recover quickly. I can't believe he stopped that first shot on the empty net too, thought it was a wrap.

He's got speed, reach and great compete. I wonder what his ceiling is, because I was thinking at best bottom pairing. He seems better than that IMO

100% agreed.

Additionally, healthy competition in camp can be a great motivational tactic for some of the young guys.

he sure did last night, he played extremely poised for his age which is the thing that most impressed me. If he can add a little bit of muscle on his frame without sacrificing any speed, and continues to show the types of efforts he did last night, I wouldn't be shocked if we was a serious contender for the Flyers this time next year.

your original statement, "Whoever the 12th fwd is will have no bearing on any success the flyers have or don’t have."

To think that a 12th forward will have no bearing on any success is foolish. If you just take a look at St. Louis and Boston, they lasted so long due to the fact they could roll 4 lines night in and night out. Guys like Oskar Sundstrom, Noel Acciari, Sean Kuraly, Alex Steen, etc etc, absolutely contributed to the team's success last year. Do I believe that a team's success "hinges" on 4th liners compared to 1st and 2nd liners? No, not exactly. But having no bearing on success I disagree with because they absolutely do, and conversely are included when a team fails.

- sjk540

Contributed sure but the difference is going to be minimal. The gap is not huge between the guys listed and a guy like Stewart is not huge to the point it is going to be a deciding factor.

Because he is cooked. He was completely out of the league last season and didn’t perform well at all in a far lesser league.

The Flyers are overvaluing what little this guy actually brings. I understand competition at camp so if he does get cut eventually I will walk back what I said and accept that it was about making it a competitive camp.

It says that they're players with little to no pro experience under their belts who haven't finished fully maturing mentally any physically.
- jmatchett383

Agreed. The Flyers have 3 coaches who have experience enough to know who to put on the team based on a lot of things that we don't see on a daily basis as they do. If Stewart (who I know little about) makes the team, then there is a reason for it.
As a side note, I did hear that he worked extremely hard in the off season to prepare himself for this tryout. He's trying to push a reset button on his career. If the work he did pays off and he makes the squad, then it shouldn't say anything about the prospects other than they could use a more seasoning.

So if Chris VandeVelde plays 82 games on the Flyers' 4th line this year, you're okay with it because the 12th forward has minimal impact?

having no bearing means having no contribution whatsoever. this is what i disagree with. yes, there will be different degrees of contribution, but that wasn't his original thought.

i also disagree with you sayin a guy like stewart compared to, maybe a Raffl, wherein i think that the disparity in my view between the collective skills of the two, I think Raffl is a much better all around player than Stewart and can contribute more to the team's overall results.

I know I am not. There is a reason that guy is not on a NHL roster right now. Plain and simple he is not good enough. I will take a player like Raffl over a Stewart or VDV any day of the week.

A 12th forward probably won't win you a lot of games but they certainly can lose games for you.

Ideally, Raffl, Pitlick and Laughton would form the 4th line for this team. All three can score a little, play on the PK and are sound without the puck and defensively.

578 games
40 goals
41 assists
863 pim

and he makes over 2 mil a year as a 4th liner. What else does he bring besides physical intimidation and fighting?

Seriously haha, one of the guys played 14 games, the other two have a couple seasons, sorry PC principal. If Stewart makes the team over em, Frank those 3 I'm done with em.

I'm fine with it. I thought it'd land at 4.5 for 6 but whatever. I think tk can get to 30 in the right conditions.
