He will be an RFA when this deal expires, will be arbitration eligible, which will likely be more than $7.3+ the qualifying offer will have to be. If Bruins take him to arbitration and say he gets $8 to $10 M, he will be a UFA the following year. - winsix
Its a big gamble for him.
Another great deal for the bs. |

The big 3 RFA dmen took different routes.
Provorov ( 6 x 6.75) went for some guaranteed term and $.
Werenski and McAvoy (~3 x 5) went for flexibility.
Subban did the same a few years ago and elevated his AAV to 9 milly. I'm sure McAvoy and Werenski are planning to be worth at least that in 3 years. |

A lot of people said it simply wouldnt happen.
It was offered, they apparently were decent deals but marner said he wanted to be a leaf. Ferris also said the leafs and marner were always close on money but it was term that was the concern. Sounds like the leafs wanted 7/8 years while marner wanted 3/4/5. - Fakepartofme
If he got the 13-14 per Dreger said he would he would have signed.
People did fall for the media's b.s |

Marner declined 2 offer sheets over the summer. Dubas knew of one according to ferris.
So offer sheets did occur. Looks like some media were right and all the peeps saying it would never happen, were wrong. - Fakepartofme
Yeah but maybe the offersheets were not good. Dreger specifically named the amount he'd get. |

I didn't say Rielly was overpaid. But today, he's underpaid. So is Kadri. So is Andersen.
The Leafs overpaid some guys but they got some guys on nice deals too. They balance out. - JohnFergusonJr
We are only paying Barrie 2.75 million this year. Does that count as underpaid? |

The part that looks great is the AAV but that's the trade off for less term.
It's team/cap friendly only in the sense that it's short term. I don't think that McAvoy's taking a big discount on a 3 yr deal. - The Law
I think McAvoy could've gotten a larger contract on a 3 year term, but I'm not sure how much larger. I like him more than Werenski (5AAV), but I see him more, so there's bias.
There aren't a lot of comparables. Just using Capfriendly to look at 3-year deals, McAvoy & Werenski eat up RFA at 4.9 & 5. Other guys like Stralman (5.5) or Schultz (5.5 in 2017) both ate up UFA years, but there's no doubt you'd rather have either McAvoy or Werenski.

I was surprised by Werenski of them all.
McAvoy makes sense since he had that weird clause he can't be offersheeted this year and such. Also, I'm sure the idea in that dressing room is the window is now so take a hair cut this time and try to win.

Dunno what he would or wouldn't have signed.
I think the 13/14 was just dregers bs. |

Rielly is underpaid. Andersen is underpaid. Kadri was underpaid. The others were fair. - JohnFergusonJr
Nah, when all three signed no one thought they were steals or underpaid. They were paid appropriately. In fact, alot on here thought andersen was unproven and paid too much. |

What were the offers? - bixll
The only one I know of was from the blue jackets and it wasn't a formal offer. It was a discussion. They said, if you were a player of ours here is what we would pay you.
Apparently, the term was 7 years and the Marner camp said 7 years was a hard no. I think the dollar amount was probably 11+. |

Yeah on his trajectory he will get around 10 million in 3 years.
Is it worth the cheap deal now ? We’ll see. |

Rielly, maybe.
Kadri was fair or overpaid until he put up 30 goals.
Andersen I think is still fairly compensated. He's a starting goalie and good, sometimes great. Has some terrible games. |

The UFA factor is ..yuuuuuge in terms $$ value.
Although MM and AM are perhaps changing that. I wonder if we see a big change to arbitration. IE - will players start being more aggressive and will the awards start getting higher. |

lmfao🤣
He turn down some “decent” deals? ooh! How much? He always wanted to be a leaf and liked the money but held out until one day into camp for shorter term 🤦♂️ 🤣
So now everybody is supposed to suck his Richard for holding out and getting almost 11,000,000 per year? 😂
This is getting to be like professional wrestling in the off-season. It kind of makes sense with the media outlet Rogers owning the team 🤔
what a (frank)ing joke 🤦♂️

The thing is playing in Minnesota or Columbus means MItch would have lost all his endorsement deals. |
