I don’t get why they only covered 2 of the receivers with jones being one of them out there |

Pretty much a must win for Atlanta. Quinn is still probably getting poopcanned at the end of this season. Long overdue after the embarrassing collapse a few years ago in the Super Bowl. |

there's a reason why he's our 3rd option |

So, Pavel, let's suppose the Flyers had bridged him. Then instead of moaning about his term, you'd moan about how they stupidly walked their No. 1 center directly to UFA status (because he could either take the QO or push an arbitration case at the end of a three-year, and then go UFA), where you are looking at paying him $10M+ to pre-empt going UFA.
Either which way, there's risk involved. In two years, if Sanheim's next deal balloons, you'll moan about why he didn't get long-term back when it would have been cheaper. - bmeltzer
Sorry bill but totally disagree with your logic here. Pavel is correct. Here’s why your theory of buying ufa is wrong...
First off, using YOUR example of bridge deal(which is always the correct way to go except in 1 case which I’ll explain later) if you look at the bridge deals of others and take into account the qf year that gets tack on and yes it usually brings them to fa, they’re CAP HIT is always lower than it should be. Example 5 Werenski cap hit over the 4 years will be roughly 5.5 mil over the 4 years. If he progresses at current pace or close to it yes he will be on line for a huge deal. But that’s a good thing. He’d be getting a huge raise anyways in that scenario. And bj will be glad in that case to pay it. If his value goes up to we will say 10 mil a year that’s what he’s gonna get. No one is gonna way overpay to get him. Yes maybe a little bit not outrageous. Example is Hayes contract. Did we overpay a little? Most would say yes. But was the overpay so outrageous ? Maybe 500k a year. Maybe 1mil? A year? Times that by the 7 years he got. What’s that equal? 3.5-7 mil total....
Now take provys deal....he by no means earned that contract. We overplayed him to “buy” a few years of fa. And if he outplays the last few years of the contract then he’s gonna feel and ask for more than he’s worth to make up for it. So flyers will also have to overpay to keep him. So they kinda equal out in the end except in provy case the CAP HIT is higher and you take more risk that the player doesn’t live up to the contract for the term (6years) and you never reap benefits of “deal” in the later few years.
The only exception to is when the case comes up where player comes off elc and signs 2 year deal and after their 2nd contract they still have a few years before fa and they sign max term deal and team might overpay toward end but save early to lower cap hit. It only works because player age after 5 years plus new max contract basically spent all his prime years with that team.
Example: Werenski elc(which is standard) 3 mil 3 years. Bridge deal(we will even assume he’s qualified4th year) 4 years 22 mil. Assume he progresses into top 10 dman in league or close to it and gets huge 6 year 60 mil contract that total 13 years 85 mil. Provy (because no bridge) example elc 3 years 3 mil 2nd contract 6 years 40mil. Now he has 9 years in league... what’s his 3rd contract gonna be? He’ll be 27-28 years old? Say he progresses like Werenski example. He’d be a few years older but still young enough to commit 5 year deal ( like jvr term) at 10 mil a year so totals for provy 14 years 93 mil. So the risk is clearly in teams favor to bridge both against player not living up to contract and also not trending downwards as they age at end of prime years. |
