The average age of the Leafs does not matter. This is a team that is primarily defined by their outrageous choking history. It does not matter if they are made up by young chokers or old chokers. They underachieve because they always wilt when it really matters.

I used to think the big ZERO on Sen's jerseys was indicative of how many Stanley Cups they've won, but now I'm starting to wonder if it represents the number of times they've managed to beat the Leafs in the playoffs?
What's the all time record? 5-0 Leafs? Or is it 6-0? Either way, Joe Nieuwendyk says hi. |

I was not 💩 on the leafs, by stating that fact. - Landsbergfan
Naw, you weren't but it isn't a fact either. If you read the Leafs thread regularly, you would find the large majority did not think they would win any of the 3 playoff series. Some of us were hopeful they had enough this past playoffs.
Other teams: Wow, they have some good young talent, they could develop into a real contender
Leafs: Window closed.

You know that choking is not losing in 7 games to a higher ranked team, right?

And the nhl wonders why it has a problem with salaries and a hard cap system? IMO all these GMs and owners have created this nightmare all by themselves for overpaying players .
Marner as good as he might be , when you want to have a hard cap system that creates parity overpaying players who haven't earned that kind of money breeds problems .
Toronto is 14 million over the salary cap . |

Marner was 11th in points in the NHL and hes not even in his prime.
The real issue is guys who arent star level talents making a lot of money. Stars should and always will get paid. It's when you pay the lesser talents too much. Like Lucic or Ericsson or Bobby Ryan. |

Philly’s young core at the moment is on D. The forwards are in the pipeline yet.
Sanheim, Provorov, Ghost, Myers, Morin, and Hart are all kids. Konecny, Patrick, and Lindblom are up now, but they’re waiting for Farabee, Frost, Rubtsov, and Vorobyev to join them. Coots is still very young, too.
It’s a nice spot to be in. They’re not ready to compete like the Leafs are today, but there’s a lot of talent there. The Flyers are about to get even younger. |

One way to spatso it is tha a team that wasn't even supposed to be in the playoffs for 5 years after drafting matthews is a choker.
Another way to see it is matthews has played 3 years and the leafs made the playoffs for 3 years.
Leafs envy runs deep in some. |

how do you stany under the cap with all those large contracts ? - rubberduckies
It will be tough for sure. Someone is going to need to be moved. According to Capfriendly they have around 1 mill in cap space with Hymen and Dermott on IR. With Barrie and Muzzin needing new contracts next season, it is hard to believe both will be back. Then you have Andersen the year after that. |

Unfortunately I think this is more of a leaf problem than a league problem. The idea that Marner has a cap hit about 2.5 million over Aho is crazy.
But the Toronto media blows so much smoke up our players' asses that they think they are the next coming.

Sounds just like someone who doesnt follow the team.
You forget Konecny who has 24 goals despite limited ice time and little to no powerplay time
You forget Provorov who did struggle last season much like Ghost but plays an avg of 25 mins a game and still puts up 30-40 points with no PP time.
You forget Carter Hart who carried a team that was at the bottom of the league, close to a playoff spot. Unfortunately the damage done at the start of the season was too much.
The Flyers also still have Frost and Farabee who are the high ranked prospects in the AHL. |

Fun Marner didn't go full Greed guy on Leafs Nation. Heck, I cant pay my mortgage, but the skating entertainer got gazillion dollars.....what a hero. - parmen
Seriously? He’s worked his a$$ off and is one of the most talented hockey players on the planet. What on earth does that have to do with you and your mortgage? |

I disagree. There is more to contracts than just how much a player is worth. There are other factors like province\state Tax and cost of living. Living in Toronto the cost is ridiculous and it is going to be way higher than what Aho is going to be paying in Carolina. Same goes for taxes. It is no different from a regular job. If you apply for a job in Toronto you will typically make more than you would make elsewhere to compensate for the cost of living. To give you an idea of how ridiculous living in Toronto is, the rent for a one bedroom condo in Toronto is 2,000 a month |

I can agree with the taxes analysis. But a similar argument could be made in the Leafs favour for the exchange rate. Cost of living? I'm not going to do the research, but I'm gonna guess the cost of living in LA or San Jose is similar to or higher than Toronto, and you are going to have a hard time convincing me that California has preferential tax treatment. Why doesn't San jose get screwed in their RFA negotiations? |

Toronto’s taxes and expenses required for a high quality of life are similar to San Francisco and Manhattan. One of the more pricey cities to live in if you settle in North America |

Leafs are among the cup favorites if they still healthy. If Matthews (likely), Tavares, or Marner go down; they're screwed. When you put all your eggs in one basket you're screwed if it breaks.
Either way, the Bruins still own the Leafs. For a tram who can't make it out of the first round, Leafs fans are awfully cocky! [/img] |
